Discord to add new Spatial Audio feature that makes friends sound like they’re in your room

Discord is experimenting with a new feature called Spatial Audio that aims to make voice chats feel more realistic, as if your friends are physically present with you.

Over the past year, Discord has added many new features, going beyond simple text and voice chat. Recently, they launched secure, end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls, improved connections for PlayStation and Xbox players, and offered more benefits and ways to personalize the app through Discord Nitro.

The company is now developing a feature called Spatial Audio for voice chats, which will significantly change how sound works within servers and make conversations feel more immersive.

Discord is testing Spatial Audio for voice channels

Discord is planning to add a new menu for Spatial Audio within its voice chat settings, as revealed by previews on X (formerly Twitter).

This new feature includes a button that allows users to customize their voice chat experience on the fly. Images circulating online reveal settings for adjusting the virtual ‘room’ size, changing how participant voices are positioned, and even a drag-and-drop interface where you can move friends around to change where their voices sound like they’re coming from in your headphones.

A different post demonstrated how the system works: voices change direction to match each person’s location within the virtual space.

We got it working. This is how the early stages operate.

Spatial Audio makes it feel like sound is coming from all around you, just like in real life. Instead of hearing everyone at the same level and from the same spot, it creates the impression that people are positioned in different places around you.

When someone joins a Discord voice chat to your left, you’ll hear their voice clearly coming from the left side of your headphones. The farther away someone is virtually positioned, the more realistic and immersive the sound becomes, especially during conversations.

This feature is very new and currently being tested. Only a limited number of Discord Canary users seem to have access to it, and Discord hasn’t officially announced it yet. It’s also unclear whether Spatial Audio will be available for free to all users or if it will be a feature reserved for Discord Nitro subscribers.
