Destiny 2 players want to break the game’s servers to show Sony demand for Destiny 3

Destiny 2 players are planning a large-scale in-game event on June 9th, when the latest update releases, to demonstrate to Sony the strong demand for a sequel, Destiny 3. They hope this show of support will encourage Bungie to begin development on the next installment.

Although neither Bungie nor its parent company have confirmed anything, rumors indicate the studio isn’t planning a sequel to their popular game, and may be undergoing substantial layoffs after the current in-game event, Monument of Triumph, concludes.

Following that news, a fan petition asking Sony to make Destiny 3 has already gained hundreds of thousands of signatures. However, that’s just one way the community is trying to show Sony they want a sequel.

Destiny 2’s ‘Sever Slam Party’

Gamers are urging each other on social media to play when the Monument of Triumph update releases on June 9th. One Reddit post specifically encourages players to exceed the previous peak player count, hoping to demonstrate their disapproval of a recent decision.

Similar messages are appearing on Facebook fan pages. One post urged people to overload PlayStation’s servers on June 9th to show the company they made a mistake.

The supposed “mistake” refers to the idea that Bungie will only focus on the Marathon game from now on, potentially abandoning Destiny 2 because Marathon hasn’t sold well since its release on March 5th.

The idea has gained a lot of traction, with a popular post going around on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) urging people to team up and play for extended periods.

It’s unclear if these efforts will actually lead to the creation of Destiny 3. While gaining popularity and interest is helpful, it doesn’t automatically mean a new game will be made.

Okay, so I’m hearing rumors that Bungie is about to do some serious layoffs, and honestly, if that happens, I don’t see how they’ll be able to make a new game. They’ve been saying for ages that they’re all-in on supporting Marathon, and building a sequel and keeping that promise would just be impossible with a smaller team. It’s a tough situation, and I’m worried about what it means for the future.

June 9th will be a significant day for Destiny 2, and it’ll be interesting to see if the game gets a boost in players after going six months without major new content. It’s a key moment for the almost decade-old title.
