The creators of Dexter: New Blood Season 2 have announced the actor who will play the villain, effectively disproving all fan guesses about the character’s identity.
The initial season of Dexter: New Blood hinted at a past serial killer called the New York Ripper, and a weapon used by this killer was found among Leon Prater’s possessions.
Even though the Ripper hadn’t been active in years, it turns out he never really disappeared, and continued to bother his victims by calling them. Detective Claudette Wallace, who originally investigated the case, is still deeply focused on catching him.
In the final episode, Dexter eliminates Prater and gathers information about other serial killers. He also leaves a file for the NYPD detailing the New York Ripper, identified as someone named “Don Framt” – though it’s uncertain if that’s his true name. Regardless, we now know which actor will portray him in the next season.

Brian Cox New York Ripper casting kills Dexter fan theories
On April 2nd, Dexter’s social media announced that Brian Cox, the 79-year-old actor famous for his role in Succession, will be playing the New York Ripper.
Throughout the first season, viewers developed many theories about who the Ripper might be, suggesting everyone from the UrCar driver, Blessing, to even Jonah Mitchell, the son of The Trinity Killer.
Fans also came up with some wild theories about other characters, including Cody, Dexter’s stepson who hasn’t been on the show for a long time, Detective Wallace’s colleague Melvin Olvia, and Harrison’s new girlfriend, Gigi.

Some fans hoped Bryan Cranston, famous for his role in Breaking Bad, would be cast, seeing him as a potential successor to the previous actor playing the part.
It’s possible Cox’s involvement is a distraction, but for now, we can assume those previous ideas aren’t correct.
Clyde Phillips, the showrunner, discussed theories about Dexter being the New York Ripper on the Dissecting Dexter podcast, specifically mentioning speculation involving Cody, Gigi, and Olivia.
I’m not claiming anything is correct or incorrect. I just think we have a great chance, when we start writing, to make the material feel more authentic and less like just an idea.
Phillips revealed that Season 2 will have both a major, overarching villain – the Ripper – and self-contained cases with new villains each week.
We have a major villain planned for next season, along with several smaller antagonists who will appear in individual episodes.
Dexter Resurrection Season 2 is planned to be released in October 2026.
