Delta Airlines scraps food & drink service on hundreds of flights

Delta Air Lines is ending complimentary food and beverage service on flights shorter than 350 miles, a change that’s proving controversial among frequent travelers.

Many travelers on shorter flights like to bring food from the airport with them. But not everyone has time for that, so they often rely on snacks and meals available on the plane.

Beginning May 19th, Delta Air Lines will stop offering food and beverage service on 450 flights each day that are shorter than 350 miles. This means no more in-flight meals, complimentary snacks, or canned drinks on those flights.

A Delta representative said this change will create a more uniform experience for travelers across all Delta flights, though not all passengers will notice a difference.

Delta scraps food & drink service on short flights

Delta passengers flying in Comfort or Main Cabin on flights 350 miles or longer will again receive complimentary drinks and snacks. Shorter flights will no longer include these items, except for those traveling in Delta First class, who will continue to receive full service, according to a Delta representative.

Even on flights where we aren’t offering drinks, our flight attendants will still be present and dedicated to looking after our passengers, just as they always are.

According to People magazine, this is the biggest update Delta has made since 2017. Back then, they began offering a simplified service on flights shorter than 350 miles, like between Los Angeles and San Francisco, or New York and Boston.

One frustrated traveler commented on Instagram that the airline was reducing everything except prices. Another user agreed, stating that customers always end up losing out.

Some people also pointed out that these flights are usually quite short – about 40 minutes – making it difficult to get service to all passengers.

Honestly, the carts are already super loaded, and sometimes when the plane takes off, it gets bumpy enough that the flight attendants can’t even get the drinks and snacks out to everyone. It’s a real pain when that happens!
