The head of DC Comics has shared insights into why manga and anime from Japan often succeed where Western comics sometimes struggle, suggesting there’s a lot Western comics can learn from the Japanese approach.
In a recent interview with Nikkei XTrend on January 26th, Jim Lee, President and Chief Creative Officer of DC, discussed why manga consistently appeals to a wide readership, while American comics largely focus on superhero stories.
Lee argues that instead of seeing manga as competition, Western comics should learn from its success, which points to areas where American comics have historically struggled.
DC Comics boss says manga has edge over US comics
I’ve been thinking a lot about manga and anime from Japan lately, and honestly, the stories are just amazing. It really makes me wonder what Western comics are missing – why can’t we get that same kind of impact and feel here? It’s something I find myself asking all the time.
He argued that American comics are too focused on a single genre – superheroes – which limits their appeal. Manga, he explained, benefits from a wider variety of stories, giving it a broader readership and stronger sales.
Lee pointed out that Japan views manga differently, considering it a significant form of literature with diverse genres, unlike the way it’s seen elsewhere.
It’s not limited to stories about heroes; there’s room for all sorts of topics, like cooking or sports. I find inspiration in that variety, and I’m thrilled the manga has done so well – it gives me something to strive for.

Lee also pointed out that American comics could benefit from studying manga, and it’s not just about the way it looks – there are other lessons to be learned too.
The manga industry is actually larger than ours, which makes us wonder what we can take away from their success. It’s more than just how things look – it’s about understanding what resonates with audiences. What works in Japan doesn’t always work in the West, and figuring out why is something we’ll likely be discussing for a long time.
Anime and manga are more popular than ever, with recent films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man: The Movie: Reze Arc achieving record-breaking sales in the United States. This success aligns with Japan’s goal to significantly grow its entertainment exports, aiming for a 20 trillion yen (approximately $130 billion USD) market by 2033.
