You know, I’ve heard a lot of reboots don’t really work, but David Boreanaz really believes a new version of The Rockford Files could be something special. He’s still pushing for it, even after it hasn’t quite happened yet, and honestly, his enthusiasm makes me think it might actually be worth a shot!
Now that the networks have finished planning their TV schedules for the 2025-2026 season, they’re starting to develop content for the next one. Most popular shows will be back, but some cancellations are making room for new series. One exciting project is a detective show reboot from the 1970s, marking a return to television for actor Boreanaz after his work on SEAL Team.
NBC is bringing back The Rockford Files, the classic detective show starring James Garner. The original series, which first aired in 1974, followed the adventures of Jim Rockford, a unique private investigator. After being wrongly convicted and spending time in prison, Rockford started a PI business in Malibu. While it’s great to see Nathan Boreanaz back on TV, this revival has actually been attempted – and failed – twice before.
The actor recently discussed the upcoming revival of The Rockford Files at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival (as reported by Variety), explaining his decision to take on the role despite past attempts that didn’t succeed. He pointed to James Bond as a successful example of a character being reimagined by different actors over time. He admitted he wasn’t familiar with the details of previous reboot efforts, but expressed enthusiasm about being the right age to play the lead. You can find his complete statement below.
Some people question whether I should take on this role, but honestly, think about how many actors have played James Bond! I’m focused on honoring what James Garner brought to similar characters, while also making the part my own.
Efforts to revive ‘The Rockford Files’ have failed in the past, and I’m not sure why. However, now seems like the perfect moment to revisit the series, and I believe I’m finally the right age to take on the lead role.
NBC has tried to bring back The Rockford Files a couple of times before. In 2009, they filmed a pilot with Dermot Mulroney, but it didn’t turn into a full series. Then, in 2012, plans for a movie starring Vince Vaughn fell through as well. This time, with Mark Harmon involved, the show is actually happening! The Rockford Files is officially scheduled to premiere on NBC in 2027.
While there’s no official launch date yet, the show is scheduled for 8pm Eastern Time – a key time slot for network television. This suggests NBC believes the new Rockford Files series has strong potential to be a success. James Boreanaz’s established TV career will likely attract initial viewers, but the story itself will ultimately determine how well the show performs.
The first episode of The Rockford Files has been filmed, and production should start up again in Southern California around October. This puts the show on track for a planned release in 2027. Don’t expect many details to emerge before then! However, it’s great to hear that Boreanaz seems very enthusiastic about bringing the series back.
