Dave Bautista has revealed why he’s not playing DC’s Peacemaker.

As a moviegoer, I always enjoyed the dynamic between Dave Bautista and James Gunn in the *Guardians of the Galaxy* films. Bautista was perfectly cast as the stoic Drax, and Gunn really brought out the best in him as the director of all three movies. It’s been exciting to watch what Gunn’s doing now, though! He’s taken on a huge role at DC Studios with Peter Safran, essentially building a whole new universe for DC and Warner Bros. It’s a big leap, but knowing his work on *Guardians*, I have high hopes!

James Gunn shared on The Howard Stern Show that he first created the Peacemaker character with Dave Bautista in mind. However, Bautista declined the role – which was initially planned for a two-movie deal – and John Cena ultimately took on the part.

What did Dave Bautista say about turning down the Peacemaker role?

Speaking with ComicBook, Bautista commented on why he turned down the Peacemaker role.

He explained that he was really hoping to play that specific role. James Gunn actually wrote it with him in mind, but unfortunately, a conflict with filming ‘Army of the Dead’ made it impossible to make the schedules work. They simply couldn’t find a way to fit it in.

Looking back, I’m really glad I didn’t take that role. It actually worked out for the best. To be honest, I don’t think I could have pulled it off like John Cena did. He was absolutely perfect for the part, and I wouldn’t have done it nearly as well. It wouldn’t have been as good with me in it.

Season 2 of Peacemaker debuted on HBO Max last month, and new episodes are released every Thursday. The season will conclude on October 9, 2025. The show stars Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith/Blue Dragon.
