What to know:
- ChunWang, a Chinese-born Maltese-Kittitian crypto investor and co-founder of F2Pool, has been named mission commander for SpaceX’s first commercial human spaceflight interplanetary mission to Mars.
- The two-year mission, targeted for launch in 2026, will include a circumlunar flyby, a high-altitude Mars flyby and a complex return trajectory, testing SpaceX’s new Starship V3 architecture and deep-space operations.
- Data from the mission, including biomedical telemetry and hardware performance, is intended to underpin Elon Musk’s plans for rapid Starship reuse and the eventual transport of massive cargo and up to a million people to Mars, as SpaceX pursues a record-breaking IPO and discloses significant bitcoin holdings.
Chun Wang, a crypto investor originally from China who co-created F2Pool and holds citizenship in Malta and St. Kitts, will lead SpaceX’s first crewed mission to Mars. This mission is a key step in Elon Musk’s ambitious goal of establishing a human presence on Mars with a population of one million people.
Wang, who runs a Bitcoin mining operation that handles about 11.3% of all Bitcoin transactions and holds an estimated $300 million in Bitcoin, is stepping down from his work in digital security to focus on deep space exploration for the next two years.
This announcement from SpaceX follows Elon Musk’s increasingly ambitious goals to colonize Mars and create a civilization that extends beyond Earth.
A two-year trek into the unknown
As an analyst, I’m tracking Wang’s planned mission, which is incredibly ambitious. It involves a week-long flight around the moon, getting within about 125 miles of its surface, with Dennis and Akiko Tito. After that, the plan is to head towards Mars – a truly historic trajectory if successful.
The mission is currently scheduled to launch in 2026, and teams are preparing the necessary technology. After launch, the crew will spend two years traveling through space. Their journey will include a thorough exploration of the area around Earth and the Moon, a close flyby of Mars, and a carefully calculated path back to Earth.
Navigating deep-space risks
Spending two years in deep space creates major challenges for spacecraft. These include significant wear and tear on equipment, and the difficulty of safely storing extremely cold fuel during long periods of travel.
To address these risks, SpaceX is introducing the next version of its Starship, called V3. This improved design includes better-insulated fuel lines, advanced systems for recycling super-cold fuel, and 60 new, specialized computers that can manage problems and handle up to 9 megawatts of power.
The astronauts will encounter significant health risks while collecting important medical data. A key part of Wang’s team’s work is closely monitoring the crew’s mental well-being and taking the first-ever X-rays of humans in space to study the long-term effects of space travel on the body.
The path to a multi-planetary future
Wang’s work aims to gather the essential information needed to move Mars exploration beyond temporary visits and towards building long-term, self-sufficient settlements.
When the crew returns to Earth, it will be a major test of Starship’s ability to navigate on its own, protect against deep-space radiation, and transfer fuel in space.
SpaceX’s research is crucial for Elon Musk’s long-term goal: proving that rockets can be quickly reused and establishing the practical groundwork for safely sending massive amounts of supplies and, ultimately, a million people to Mars.
News of the planned Mars mission coincides with SpaceX secretly filing paperwork for an initial public offering that could value the company at over $1.75 trillion – a record-breaking amount. At the same time, Elon Musk’s company has also publicly disclosed, for the first time, that it holds 8,285 bitcoins.
