The new version of the action movie *Cliffhanger*, originally starring Sylvester Stallone, is coming to theaters in 2026. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, this reboot features Pierce Brosnan and Lily James taking on the high-stakes adventure more than three decades after the original film. Row K Entertainment picked up the U.S. distribution rights at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and quickly scheduled its release.
According to *The Playlist*, the upcoming *Cliffhanger* remake aims for a realistic and thrilling experience, similar to *The Shallows* in its intensity and *The Grey* in its emotional depth. It will focus on the characters’ struggles rather than relying on over-the-top action. Row K previously described it as a major cinematic event and has scheduled its release for August 28, 2026. While August is often a slow month for movie releases, this timing could actually help the film stand out, as it avoids direct competition with the biggest summer hits.
Row K is a new production company, launching just in late August, but they’ve already secured several exciting projects. These include the upcoming films *Dead Man’s Wire* by Gus Van Sant (January 16, 2026), *Poetic License*, the directorial debut of Maude Apatow (May 15, 2026), and the romantic drama *Charlie Harper* starring Nick Robinson and Emilia Jones (September 25, 2026). A particularly noteworthy addition to their lineup is a new version of *Cliffhanger*. The original 1993 film, starring Sylvester Stallone, was a major box office success, earning $255 million worldwide on a $70 million budget, and Row K is hoping for a similar result with this remake.

The original *Cliffhanger* starred Sylvester Stallone as Gabe Walker, a former mountain ranger who attempts a rescue mission that turns into a dangerous heist in the Rockies. The new version, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, flips the story, focusing on Ray Cooper (Pierce Brosnan) and his daughter, Sydney, who run a ski chalet in the Dolomites. Things go wrong when they host a billionaire’s son for a weekend, becoming targets for kidnappers. Ray’s daughter, Naomi, having previously survived a climbing accident, sees the attack and manages to escape. She must overcome her trauma and fight to protect her family.
