Jensen Ackles’ role as Russell in Tracker season 3 gets an unexpected change.
The show Tracker largely depends on its main character, Colter Shaw. Although he has a team—Reenie, Randy, and Mel—they mostly assist from a distance. Colter usually handles the dangerous work alone, getting help from people he meets during each case. Occasionally, his estranged older brother, Russell, joins him, and they were able to mend their years-long conflict relatively quickly.
As a huge TV fan, I’ve always loved Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles – especially for their work on Supernatural. Ackles just has that undeniable screen presence! Even though he wasn’t a main cast member on Tracker, he quickly became a favorite of mine – he brings a fun, lighthearted energy that really complements Colter’s more serious nature. When those two are together, it’s magic, so I was thrilled to hear Ackles was returning for the season 3 finale of Tracker! It’s going to be a great episode.
Russell will be back before the season finale of Tracker, according to CBS. The next-to-last episode, titled “Chrono Stasis,” will see the brothers teaming up to investigate their father’s secret work. Then, in the season 3 finale, “The Best Ones,” Russell and Colter will continue working together to find someone who was harmed by a dangerous research project. It’s currently unclear if this case is connected to their father’s past.
I’m still hoping we see more of Jared Ackles on TV! Even though he comes back for Tracker every year, fans – myself included – really want him to have a bigger role. There’s even talk of CBS creating a whole new show around him, and honestly, Tracker has already given us glimpses into his character’s life outside of the main storyline, which feels like a fantastic starting point. It’s a little surprising CBS hasn’t considered expanding the Tracker universe, because if they did, Ackles would be absolutely perfect to lead it!
Rather than a separate series, Tracker offers a way to feature Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles together more often. They clearly enjoy working with each other, and that chemistry shines on screen as Colter and Russell. In fact, Russell, the older Shaw brother, actually improves the show by adding some much-needed personality and making Colter a more engaging character.
Jared Padalecki taking on a bigger part in season 3 of Tracker might suggest CBS is thinking about how to keep the show fresh. With Marshals becoming a strong competitor during the 2025-2026 television season, Tracker may need to evolve. Featuring Russell more prominently, even in a recurring role, could be a way to do that.
