Cate Blanchett plans to make “creative rumpus” at Oxford

Cate Blanchett will be a visiting professor at the University of Oxford. The position, created in 1990, has also been held by well-known actors like Ian McKellen (from X-Men) and Diana Rigg (of Game of Thrones).
Cate Blanchette will be a visiting professor of contemporary theatre at St Catherine’s College in the 2026-27 school year. She shared her thoughts on the position, saying:
Art pushes the limits of what we can imagine, prompting us to question and explore the world around us. By doing so, it expands our understanding of reality and challenges how we see things.
As someone who’s been creating things for a long time, I’ve found it really helps me turn my emotions into something concrete – like actual ideas! It’s also opened up ways for me to understand things more deeply, giving me real ‘aha!’ moments.
I’m thrilled about the visiting professorship! It’s a fantastic chance to connect with and learn from bright, emerging students and creatives. I can’t wait to start collaborating and exploring new ideas.
Besides her work on stage, Cate Blanchett will appear in the films Alpha Gang and Sweetstick. She’s also part of the upcoming sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, scheduled for release in June 2027.
