Well, well, well. Looks like Deanco Healthcare (aka Mission Community Hospital, because who doesn’t love a good alias?) has decided to turn their cyber nightmare into your financial dream. That’s right, darlings, if your data took a vacation without you, you might be in for a $5,100 windfall. Pass the champagne-or at least the cheap prosecco!
According to the official settlement website (because nothing says “we’re sorry” like a URL), Deanco is coughing up $1.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit over a May 2023 data breach. Apparently, some sneaky threat actor (read: digital burglar) got their hands on everything from your Social Security number to your dog’s birthday-kidding, but who knows at this point?
The exposed data includes all the juicy details: addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account info, and even your deepest, darkest health insurance secrets. Basically, everything but your Netflix password. Phew!
ComplianceHome (the watchdog of watchdogs) reports that 269,547 Americans were affected. That’s a lot of people whose data is now floating around the dark web like a lost sock in the dryer. Classy.
Here’s the kicker: eligible Californians can claim up to $5,000 for documented losses (because who doesn’t love a good receipt hunt?) plus a $100 statutory payment. That’s $5,100 to spend on therapy, a new identity, or a really nice pair of noise-canceling headphones to block out the chaos.
Oh, and don’t forget the cherry on top: two years of medical monitoring services. Because nothing says “we care” like monitoring your health after we’ve already exposed it to the world.
Deanco, of course, denies any wrongdoing. Classic. “It’s not us, it’s the hackers!” they cry, while quietly writing a $1.5 million check. But hey, at least they’re not asking for a thank-you note.
