Cape Verde goalkeeper becomes Instagram sensation after World Cup game against Spain

The goalkeeper for Cape Verde has gained millions of new followers on Instagram after helping his team keep a clean sheet against Spain in the World Cup – a historic achievement for the nation.

Cape Verde achieved a historic milestone as the smallest and second least populated nation to ever qualify for the World Cup. While Curacao later surpassed these records, Cape Verde’s 0-0 draw against Spain was still a remarkable accomplishment.

Man, as a fan, witnessing that was incredible! It was our nation’s first ever World Cup game, and we actually managed to tie one of the teams everyone expects to win the whole thing. Seriously, what a result!

The team’s outstanding performance brought attention to all its players, especially 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha. He earned player of the match honors with an impressive seven saves and appeared deeply moved by the victory.

Once the game ended, the goalkeeper was shocked to discover he’d gained millions of new followers on Instagram.

Vozinha racks up 6 million Insta followers after Spain draw

I couldn’t believe how quickly Vozinha blew up! Before the game, he had about 46,000 followers, but by the time they interviewed him after the match, that number jumped to over 1.5 million! And it didn’t stop there – as of today, he’s already at a massive 6 million followers. It’s been amazing to watch!

After the game, Caze TV, a Brazilian channel, shared that they had asked viewers to follow the player, and that’s when his follower count began to rapidly increase. Vozinha was shocked by what was happening, describing it as “insane.”

Hearing that he’d earned 1.5 million new Instagram followers after his amazing play in the Spain match was an incredible experience for Vozinha! What a fantastic achievement for him.

Cape Verde has a population of about 524,000 people, which means this goalkeeper has more than ten times as many followers as there are citizens in his home country.

A lot of the initial support came from Brazil, but word spread quickly and fans from other countries joined in, significantly increasing the total. With at least two more World Cup games guaranteed, and potentially more if they advance, it’s hard to say how much higher the numbers will go.

Cape Verde’s surprising tie with Spain resulted in one Polymarket user losing a $1 million bet that Spain would win.
