The Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game that was previously cancelled is now back in development with a new team. A recently released trailer gives fans a look at the 2D, one-on-one fighting gameplay they can anticipate.
A new fighting game, currently called Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, was announced at a celebration of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s 20th anniversary during New York Comic Con. It’s planned to come out in the summer of 2026 and will initially include 12 characters you can play, with additional characters being added over time through regular updates.
Although the game appears to be a one-on-one fighting game based on the initial trailer, the Steam description reveals it will also feature support characters. These characters will change how fighters play and give them access to new abilities. The trailer showcased several characters, including Aang, Korra, Zuko, Toph, Katara, Sokka, and Azula.
Avatar Legends aims to recreate the art style of the original animated series with its hand-drawn 2D visuals and focus on dynamic movement. Players can enjoy an original story in the single-player campaign, practice combos in a dedicated mode, and compete online with smooth, reliable connections and cross-platform play.
The game is built for both new players and experienced fighting game fans. It takes inspiration from classic titles but also introduces innovative ways to move, a unique visual style, and a new level of freedom in combat, according to its Steam page.
A fighting game based on the Avatar universe, previously canceled by Maximum Entertainment, is now back in development. Gameplay Group International, a company known for rescuing promising but abandoned projects – as highlighted by Gamesbeat – is taking on the task.
Beyond the previously announced projects, there’s more Avatar content on the way! Saber Interactive is developing a high-budget video game set thousands of years before the original series, featuring a brand new Avatar. Plus, a new animated movie, ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender,’ is scheduled for release in October 2026, and another animated series, ‘Avatar: Seven Havens,’ is currently in development.
