When Blue Bloods ended, some of the Reagan family returned to television in 2025 with a new show, Boston Blue. The renewal of Boston Blue for a second season shows CBS didn’t need all the original Blue Bloods cast members to create a successful spin-off. Donnie Wahlberg returned as Danny Reagan, and the show’s move to Boston meant he’d be working with mostly new characters. By giving Boston Blue the same time slot that Blue Bloods once held, CBS set itself up for success.
A major question surrounding Boston Blue was what would bring Danny Reagan to leave New York City after so many years on Blue Bloods. The show quickly answered that: Danny travels to Boston when his son, Sean, a member of the Boston police force, is hurt in a fire. He then teams up with a new partner, Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, and stays in Boston. The show features the Silver family sharing meals together, much like the Reagan family did, and despite some comments from Tom Selleck about the Blue Bloods spinoff, things are going smoothly.
The new show, Boston Blue, made some significant changes from Blue Bloods that could have alienated long-time fans. However, the fresh storyline also allowed new viewers to jump in without needing to know the history of the Reagan family. Thankfully, the show has been a success, and while it’s too soon to say if it will last as long as the original, things are looking good for Danny, Lena, and the whole team.
Boston Blue Season 2 Has Already Been Confirmed By CBS
CBS didn’t keep viewers waiting to find out if its new series would return. In December, the network renewed Boston Blue for a second season after only six episodes aired on Fridays. While a renewal wasn’t unexpected – the show became the most popular new broadcast drama of the 2025-2026 TV season – even fans were surprised by how quickly the decision was made. Sheriff Country also received a quick renewal for season two, though CBS waited longer to confirm season five of Fire Country to complete the Friday night schedule.
When Boston Blue premiered, it was a huge success for CBS, helping the network outperform its competitors during its first week. Critics initially loved the show, giving it a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes – even higher than Blue Bloods (though the score has since dropped to 82%). This early popularity showed Donnie Wahlberg made the right decision to keep playing his character, Danny, despite the show moving away from most of the Reagan family.
When Will Boston Blue Season 2 Release?
CBS hasn’t announced a premiere date for the new season of Boston Blue, and fans may have to wait until late summer to find out. However, the network has confirmed the show will return in the fall and will keep its successful Friday night time slot. Boston Blue will continue to air at 10 p.m., following Fire Country at 9 p.m. and Sheriff Country at 8 p.m. If CBS follows its usual schedule, the new season will likely premiere around mid-October.
While Boston Blue will likely air after Fire Country initially, it won’t be for the entire season. Fire Country is only getting 13 episodes for its fifth season, which is a surprising decision given how well CBS’s Friday night programming had been performing. As of now, CBS hasn’t said what will take over the timeslot once Fire Country ends, but a new medical drama connected to the world of Fire Country is being considered.
What Boston Blue Season 2’s Story Could Be
Similar to shows like Blue Bloods, Boston Blue is a police drama where each case often stands alone, making it hard to guess what will happen next. The show has included some ongoing storylines, like the Silver family seeking justice for a family member’s murder. While Sean’s injury was resolved relatively quickly, Danny continued working with Lena on cases even after his son recovered. Now that Danny has officially joined the Boston Police Department, season 2 of Boston Blue might focus even more on individual cases than before.
It’s very possible we’ll see more familiar faces from Blue Bloods join Donnie Wahlberg in the new spinoff series. Marisa Ramirez appeared in a few episodes as Maria Baez, continuing the relationship her character had with Danny on the original show. Bridget Moynahan, Lou Cariou, and Will Hochman have also made appearances, reprising their roles as Erin Reagan, Henry Reagan, and Joe Hill, respectively. While Tom Selleck’s return as Frank Reagan isn’t confirmed, Sean Reagan also appeared, though the spinoff cast a different actor in the role.
It remains to be seen whether the original cast of Boston Blue‘s first season will be back for more. While Blue Bloods kept most of its actors throughout its run, there’s no certainty that will happen with Donnie Wahlberg’s new show.
