Windrose is a survival game that offers more than just crafting and base building. You’ll also be fighting enemies both on land and at sea, tackling different activities, and completing a variety of main and side quests to advance in the game.

As you play and finish quests, your character will get stronger by leveling up. Each level lets you improve different abilities, making it easier to overcome challenges and stay alive.

How to Level Up in Windrose

To improve your character in Windrose, you first need to learn how leveling works. Unlike many other survival games where you earn experience by defeating enemies, building, or completing quests, Windrose has a different system.

Windrose gives you experience points for making progress in quests – whether you finish a step, complete an entire quest, or finish activities at interesting locations.

Quests are easy to understand – they simply lead you through tasks and give you rewards when you finish them. Points of interest are a little different and require more exploration.

Every interesting location on the island asks you to do certain things, like finish tasks, collect items, or unlock chests. The number of each needed is displayed right on the location itself.

You’ll earn experience points whenever you finish everything there is to do at a location. Most locations award either 25 or 50 experience points, but a few give you 100.

As you play, you’ll earn experience and eventually level up. Each time you level up, you’ll get points to improve your character’s abilities and unlock new talents.

Best Talents

Windrose offers a variety of talents to customize your character. These talents are organized into four sections, letting you spend points to develop your preferred skills.

  • Northern Quadrant — Focused on one-handed weapons.
  • Eastern Quadrant — Focused on crude damage and two-handed weapons.
  • Southern Quadrant — Focused on piercing damage and firearms.
  • Western Quadrant — Focused on stamina recovery and survival.

As you gain experience, you’ll earn points to spend on improving your abilities. These abilities are grouped into categories, and the more points you invest in a specific category, the more powerful those abilities become.

Talent Ability Reasoning
Marathon Runner Grants additional stamina Stamina can be a real killer in the earlier hours of Windrose, with your character running out fairly quickly. This will give you additional stamina, allowing you to perform more attacks and dodges.
Stitches and Rum Gain increased healing effects This talent increases the amount of healing you receive from potions. Healing is always a must, and this will help with your survivability.
Just a Flesh Wound Increases damage resistance You will commonly be attacked by more than one enemy. This talent, as well as being a great Monty Python reference, will increase your damage resistance, allowing you to survive more hits.
Too Angry to Die Instantly restores 30% health when you receive a fatal blow Too Angry to Die allows you to regain health instead of dying when you receive a fatal blow. While the cooldown for this ability is 16 minutes, it is still an amazing talent to have when dealing with groups of enemies or a boss.
Surgical Cuts Increases your critical hit chance Critical hit chance doesn’t sound amazing, but it will matter greatly in the long run when you upgrade this skill multiple times. If you are a fan of one-handed weapons, this skill applies to any of them, even if they don’t deal slashing damage, making it great for nearly any build.
Deadly Finale Consecutive hits increase damage Combat has a bit of a cycle to it, where you can hit an enemy around three to five times, block, and then repeat. Deadly Finale allows you to take advantage of that cycle, increasing your damage with each hit in that chain.

Beyond general skills, focus on improving the damage output of your favorite weapons. If you prefer quick weapons like rapiers and pistols, boost your precision skill. For heavier, two-handed weapons, improve their specific damage stat. Currently, there are no skills available to help with ship-to-ship combat.
