If you’ve put a few hours into Windrose by now, you’ll realise, quite like the real ocean, it’s !
Getting around takes time, no matter where you go – whether you’re hiking over islands, exploring dark caves, or sailing rough seas. And Tortuga is the same – travel here isn’t quick!
Looking for a central place to trade goods, find ingredients, or discover new recipes? Tortuga is the place to be! Let’s explore how to get there and what it has to offer.
Miles of Open Water
If you’re planning a trip to Tortuga, you’ll need a larger ship first! Specifically, you’re looking for a Ketch.
Progress through the main story until you discover a large shipwreck on an island near the coast. Your next goal is to fix the ship and rescue the people stranded on nearby islands. Once you’ve done that, you’ll gain access to the Ketch – a much bigger and faster boat than the one you’re currently using.
You have a choice: you can go directly to Tortuga, or you can first finish the “How My Sea Adventure Began” tutorial. This tutorial will teach you how to fight at sea, and it will mark Tortuga on your map after you sink your first ship. Plus, you’ll earn experience points that will help when you eventually reach Tortuga.
Crossing the Waves
After you’ve finished preparing, you’ll be ready to begin your journey. It’s a long trip, heading far to the northwest, so be sure to pack plenty of repair kits for your boat.
Okay, so getting to Tortuga isn’t a simple trip! You’ll be sailing through some seriously rough seas. The worst is definitely Blackbeard Waters – it’s crawling with pirates who are just itching for a fight. Then there’s the Undead Waters, and those ships are tough – we’re talking levels 6 to 10! The key there is to just avoid them at all costs, don’t even think about fighting. Keep the sails full and just keep going – full speed ahead is the way to go!
Okay, so the second you get to Tortuga, you instantly unlock a fast travel spot! Seriously, it’s a lifesaver because that trip to get there is pretty rough, and you’ll never have to do it again!
Tortuga
You’ll recognize Tortuga by the large, blue flame that completely surrounds the island, separating it from the mainland.
Don’t worry about the strange fires right now. Instead, go to the town square. You’ll see different groups with stalls set up, and you can talk to them to learn more.
- The Rogue Buccaneers
- The Brethren of the Coast
- The Smugglers of Port Royal
Each of these groups has a representative, called a Bounty Agent, who you can trade Insignias and Letters of Favour with. Doing so will improve your standing with that group, eventually letting you purchase better items.

Each faction also includes a Provisioner, which is simply a merchant. These merchants sell different items – some focus on ingredients, others on clothing, and still others on various other goods.
Look for items with Set Bonuses. These will give you a serious edge in combat!
You’ll also find crew members gathering in the square. You can hire them for a fee, and each one has a special skill – like alchemy or tailoring – to help you get ready for your next adventure.
