Over the past few years, there’s been a growing trend in multiplayer gaming towards cooperative play. This is largely thanks to the popularity of games like It Takes Two and Split Fiction from Hazelight Studios. These titles have shown players that there are many fun multiplayer options that aren’t based on competitive player-versus-player battles or ongoing subscriptions.
Co-op games have been around almost as long as video games themselves, but they’re currently experiencing a surge in popularity. We’ve already seen several excellent co-op releases this year, and many more promising titles are scheduled to come out in 2026, suggesting this trend will continue.
Lots of exciting co-op games are scheduled to release in 2026, spanning all sorts of genres. If you’re looking for new games to play with friends, there will be plenty of options!
10. Directive 8020
Screaming In Space

The Dark Anthology games are known for feeling like interactive movies, and Directive 8020 is no different. It’s a sci-fi horror experience best enjoyed with friends! The ‘Movie Night’ mode lets up to six people play together, with each person controlling a character and voting on what happens next, making it a fun, collaborative experience.
This isn’t a typical cooperative game mode, but you and your friends will definitely be working together to survive against aliens. Each time you play, different characters might live or die, and what counts as a ‘good’ ending can vary based on who you ask. This just means there’s lots of reason to play again and again with your friends.
9. Forza Horizon 6
Big In Japan
Okay, so I probably won’t ever be drifting around Tokyo with my friends in real life, but Forza Horizon 6 looks like the closest I’ll get! Just like the other Horizon games, you can team up with friends online and just mess around, exploring and having fun. Plus, there are tons of races and challenges to keep you busy and help you level up – it’s going to be awesome!
The game will also have relaxed, in-game events where players can meet up and show off their customized cars. It’s rare to find racing games with good co-op features, but the Forza Horizon series is known for being excellent. If you enjoy playing with friends, this game is a must-try.
8. Out of Words
The Sound of Silence
Out of Words immediately grabs your attention with its beautiful stop-motion animation. The game tells the story of two close friends who suddenly find themselves in a world without mouths, and must solve puzzles and navigate challenging platforms to progress. It’s designed for cooperative play, emphasizing teamwork, skillful execution, and precise timing to overcome obstacles.
Out of Words shows a lot of potential and could become a very popular co-op game, similar to Journey or It Takes Two. It will be fascinating to see if the characters’ lack of mouths impacts how players interact online, and if so, how.
7. Subnautica 2
Under the Sea
Forget the fairytale – life under the sea isn’t always perfect! The upcoming game Subnautica 2 is a sequel to the popular underwater survival game, and it’s shaping up to be both stunning and perilous, especially for players teaming up with friends. Get ready to explore a brand new ocean, pilot new vehicles, and even alter your own body to increase your chances of surviving the depths.
If you like survival games, you definitely shouldn’t miss Subnautica 2, where you’ll explore alien oceans and try to avoid becoming a snack for massive crabs and squids. Just be warned: Subnautica games are all about adapting or failing!
6. The Duskbloods
A Bloody Good Time
FromSoftware, the studio behind challenging games like the Souls series and Bloodborne, is creating a new action-RPG called The Duskbloods. Players will take on the role of vampire-like characters and team up with up to seven others for both player-versus-player and cooperative gameplay. Though details are still limited, early looks suggest the game will feature the beautifully grotesque creature designs fans have come to expect from FromSoftware’s previous titles.
Details are currently scarce about The Duskbloods, but it looks like a promising game for those who like a good challenge. I usually struggle in these kinds of games on my own, so I’m especially excited about this and games like Elden Ring: Nightreign that emphasize cooperative play. It’s much more fun when I can team up with a friend to overcome difficult sections.
5. Ikuma: The Frozen Compass
Cold as Ice
If you enjoyed Lost Ember, you’ll likely love Mooneye Studios’ new game, Ikuma: The Frozen Compass. This cooperative adventure follows a boy and his dog as they struggle to survive in the harsh, frozen arctic. Players will need to explore the environment and carefully manage their resources if they want to make it home safely.
Ikuma, similar to games like It Takes Two and Split Fiction, is a co-op adventure where each player has a unique experience. What one player does as the boy will be different from what the other does as the dog. It looks like a fun and exciting adventure that any two players will enjoy together.
4. Hela
It’s A Small World
Even among many beautiful games, Hela really shines. This upcoming cooperative game lets players control two incredibly cute mice as they journey through a vibrant countryside and figure out puzzles. They can glide through windy caves and even hitch a ride on a moose – a bit like Spider-Man swinging onto its back!
If you enjoy playing games with friends and prefer a lighthearted, welcoming atmosphere, Hela is a game you should check out. It’s a charming adventure with a cute idea and beautiful graphics, making it feel cozy and inviting.
3. Orbitals
Saving the Universe
Beyond Orbitals is a visually stunning, anime-inspired co-op puzzle game that has the potential to be as popular as titles like It Takes Two and Split Fiction. Its 80s retro art style is immediately striking, and the gameplay promises a variety of asymmetrical puzzles where players explore alien worlds and use jetpacks to get around.
As a huge fan of classic mecha anime like Voltron and Robotech, I instantly fell in love with the look of Orbitals – it really captures that same Saturday morning cartoon vibe! If you’re searching for a fun co-op game to play with a friend or your partner, I think you’ll absolutely want to check this one out. It’s quickly become a favorite of mine!
2. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
Light the Bat-Signal
The new Lego Batman game, Lego Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight, looks set to be a huge and impressive addition to the popular Lego and DC partnership. It’s pulling from Batman’s entire history and will feature a ton of supporting characters, including all the different versions of Robin. Batman and Robin are a perfect fit for the fun, lighthearted co-op gameplay that Lego games are famous for.
Lego Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight lets you experience Batman’s history, from his beginnings to his more recent, darker portrayal in comics. It’s designed to be enjoyable for all ages – perfect for families to play together or for friends to team up and have fun.
1. Grand Theft Auto 6
Getting the Gang Back Together
Grand Theft Auto 6 will likely have a captivating story mode, but many players are most excited about the online multiplayer experience. Given the continued popularity and success of GTA Online, which regularly adds new content like heists, vehicles, and community events, the next installment promises to be impressive.
While we don’t know exactly what GTA 6 will include when it’s released, Rockstar has confirmed players will be able to create their own content. We can probably expect new and detailed missions for players to tackle as a team. At the very least, players will definitely be able to explore the game’s open world and have fun together.
