Below Deck Down Under Recap: Breakup Cake

The most engaging seasons of Below Deck skillfully blend the demands of the job with the crew’s personal lives. After a relatively calm season three, the show found success by mixing experienced yachties with newcomers. This created a season where professional and personal conflicts really intertwined, developing into complex storylines with multiple layers. The particularly eccentric charter guests also helped! The ongoing tension between Mike and Alesia, which has been bothering Daisy ever since Alesia switched from the kitchen to the interior crew, is still getting worse. It’s remarkable how strongly both of them believe they’re right, despite clearly being in the wrong.

The arguing starts up again as they’re getting ready to leave when Tyler announces “one last little competition”: a thousand dollars to whoever will fully undress and jump off the marina’s dock. Alesia and Mike both try to be the one to do it, eager for attention, but Mike wins. It’s a silly and embarrassing challenge, but Tyler seems determined to keep things unpredictable. When his friend Nick refuses to part with a personal item, Tyler instead gives Jason the fake breasts used during a drag performance as a gift. It’s clear Tyler might enjoy watching a competitive reality show. “He doesn’t deserve this,” Alesia complains as Mike dries off, still fully buttoned up in her uniform.

Drop-off went well overall, except for a bit of a meltdown from Daisy during breakfast. She’s frustrated that Ben let Ellie focus solely on João’s cake all morning, especially after the mistake with the soapy eggs, instead of asking Ellie to help with serving. Daisy feels this highlights a bigger problem with the team: Ellie prioritizing the cake over customers, and Ben not offering any assistance when he saw Daisy was overwhelmed – as if it wasn’t his responsibility to help.

Jason gathered the entire interior team, including those working in the galley and providing service, for a meeting to discuss tips. He then handed it over to Daisy, who urged everyone to prioritize the team’s performance over individual feelings. Guest feedback cards highlighted specific issues – they remembered the poorly prepared eggs and a spoiled surprise, leading to Ellie receiving a playful punishment. The resulting tip pool was one of the lowest all season, totaling $22,000, which translated to $1,600 per person, with a small boost from an extra $1,000 Mike earned by jumping off the dock. João supported Daisy’s message, asking for respectful communication, but immediately after, Mike and Alesia resumed their conflict. Alesia complained she felt unfairly criticized by Daisy, and Mike responded by sarcastically provoking her.

Mike tries to excuse his confrontational behavior by claiming he’s just responding to Alesia’s actions, but often he’s the one who starts the arguments. While Alesia isn’t perfect, Mike struggles to stay focused on the work, which is a crucial skill for this job. As Jason points out to Daisy later, learning to cooperate with colleagues in a confined space is part of the job; if you can’t handle that, yachting might not be for you. Right now, though, Daisy is frustrated because Mike expects her to resolve his issues with Alesia, simply because she’s in charge. He hints at the same thing to João, but more subtly – he clearly feels more comfortable challenging Daisy directly. It’s interesting to wonder why that might be…

The crew has two days off, filled with a relaxing afternoon at a villa in the marina and a fun beach trip on a catamaran. Jason hopes they’ll use the time to connect and resolve the issues impacting their work. However, with alcohol, sunshine, and a pool, things quickly escalate, and conflict actually increases. Luckily, the drama on this season of Below Deck Casa Amor is more complex than typical romantic entanglements, making it a more captivating watch. Mike starts by apologizing to João for his behavior, but doesn’t extend the same courtesy to Daisy. In fact, Mike, seemingly embracing his role as the instigator, deliberately stirs up trouble that doesn’t even involve him.

The drama begins with Ellie and João. Mike has always liked Ellie, so when he learns they’re having trouble, he sees it as a chance to make a move. Knowing João tried to end things with Ellie the night before, Mike asks her how it went. Ellie describes the conversation, and it doesn’t sound like a breakup. Then, Eddy – who isn’t as innocent as he seems – encourages Mike to share what he heard from João. This is how Ellie discovers everyone already knows João is interested in Daisy. She immediately confronts João, who then pulls Mike into the conversation to sort things out. João argues with Mike about how he presented the information – things like saying “it’s not working out” or “he likes Daisy” – but doesn’t deny the information itself. Completely shocked, Ellie goes to bed for the night. It’s clear Mike isn’t very considerate of Ellie’s feelings, despite supposedly being interested in her.

Mike didn’t stop after raising a complaint, and continued arguing with Alesia right in front of Daisy. Their pointless fighting was ridiculous and isn’t worth repeating, but it was clearly upsetting Daisy. Both Mike and Alesia tried to blame Daisy for their conflict. When Daisy asked how they could resolve the constant bickering, Alesia started to say it was Daisy’s fault – claiming it was her responsibility “as a department head” – but Daisy cut her off. She firmly told Alesia that her issue with Mike was between them, and they needed to solve it themselves. It wasn’t clear what Mike and Alesia expected Daisy to do – babysit them like feuding cats, or even fire one of them? Even if Daisy tried the tactic Jason used with Ben and Ellie – forcing them to work it out in a room together – she doubted it would work. Mike and Alesia might just end up making things even worse, possibly beyond repair.

Ellie went to bed upset, regretting her pursuit of João. Daisy comforted her. The next day, on João’s birthday, Mike tried to win Ellie over while they were on a catamaran, but she wasn’t interested. João acted annoyed with Mike for causing drama, but secretly seemed pleased that Mike was potentially damaging his relationship with Ellie, saving him the trouble of ending things himself. Daisy realized what João was doing and urged him to talk to Ellie. When he finally did, at the beach, he avoided the chance to break up with her. Ellie directly asked him what he wanted their relationship to be, and he said he just wanted to have fun and enjoy the day together. João dismissed the situation with Mike as a misunderstanding, leaving Ellie feeling hopeful that he still wanted to be with her.

Both João and Ellie, and Eddy and Jenna are facing relationship trouble. Eddy and Jenna start off well, planning a second date, but things quickly fall apart. Eddy overwhelms Jenna with his fast-moving affection, especially when he starts talking about marriage and a long-term future, which scares her off. He thought she’d appreciate his enthusiasm, but it had the opposite effect. Jenna starts to reconnect with Ben, who she seemed interested in earlier in the season, telling him Eddy isn’t her usual type. Their date at a marina restaurant confirms this, and Daisy and Jason secretly watch the whole thing unfold from the dock.

Jenna is typically attracted to guys who seem polished, like Ben – even if they have quirky habits, such as wearing shoes in bed. After helping Ellie finish the lemon-meringue cheesecake, Ben spends the rest of the evening with Jenna. The two couples come together as Jenna and Ben watch João and Ellie talking at the front of the boat, while enjoying wine. Ben is aware that João is determined to finally tell Ellie how he truly feels. He casually reminded João earlier that they only kissed once, which surprised me because I’d been focused on the cake and had forgotten Ellie and João hadn’t even dated. However, Ellie isn’t hurt that their brief relationship didn’t become something more; she’s upset that João treated her feelings carelessly. João expresses his regret for not being upfront with her sooner. With what little composure she has left, Ellie firmly states that their relationship will be strictly business from now on – no friendship, no casual conversation. She then tells him to enjoy the cake she spent three days making.

João is visibly upset after Jenna leaves. He tearfully admits in a private interview that he regrets hurting anyone and acknowledges he should have been honest earlier. It’s true – he had multiple chances to express his feelings but consistently avoided difficult conversations! Thankfully, Jenna and Ben get to enjoy a delicious lemon-meringue cheesecake that Ben had hoped to share with guests. After João goes to bed, Jenna quickly realizes she has more in common with Ben than she did with Eddy over the past two days. Ben subtly positions himself as Eddy’s competition, which seems to appeal to Jenna. Later, Ben invites Jenna to join him in the master cabin whenever she wants, and she sneaks out at 5 a.m. to do just that. The episode concludes with the sound of kissing, while Eddy remains asleep, believing his date with Jenna went well.
