Elden Ring, like many recent games from FromSoftware, is packed with rich lore. Players have been developing fascinating theories for years, and the new Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has only fueled this, with some theories so complex they require lengthy video essays to explain fully.
Four years after its release, a previously unseen cutscene from the game has been found. It shows Miquella, Malenia’s brother, creating the enormous Haligtree – the area where players battle Malenia. Lance McDonald, a data mining YouTuber, discovered the footage within the game’s files and shared it publicly for the first time.
There’s a hidden cutscene that’s meant to trigger after you get an item from Gideon the All-Knowing. Unfortunately, some necessary files are missing, making it normally impossible to see, even if you access the game’s unused content. But a player named McDonald was able to fix the issue and get the cutscene working. It features Miquella speaking beautifully about the Haligtree, explaining its future as he plants a seedling and nourishes it with his own blood.
This new information offers a fresh perspective on Miquella’s relationship with his twin sister, revealing the depth of his affection for her—even considering his seemingly power-hungry and manipulative behavior in Shadow of the Erdtree. It also provides interesting background on the origins of the Haligtree and explains the location of Malenia’s battle arena, which is precisely where Miquella planted the Haligtree’s seed.
Although most of a deleted scene didn’t make the final cut, a single frame did appear in the game. Players are already analyzing what Miquella says in that scene, and it’s likely we’ll see lengthy videos breaking down the story and its meaning. Honestly, this little bit of removed content reminded me how strong the lore and storytelling are in Elden Ring, even though I don’t love the main game – I’m a huge fan of Shadow of the Erdtree, though, and I’m eager to hear those in-depth analyses.
One player on Reddit predicted that this single scene will inspire hours of in-depth analysis videos on YouTube, and another expressed their excitement. I completely agree – it’s definitely something to look forward to.
Many players are disappointed this cutscene was cut, even though it didn’t reveal a lot about Miquella. One player explained that the DLC didn’t offer much information about him beyond this single scene after the final boss. They wish they’d had more direct insight into his story, instead of having to piece things together from rumors and speculation, which is common in the game.
It’s great to get more background information and clues about the world of Elden Ring – it’s fun to speculate about the story! I really enjoy the game’s lore and would definitely play another game set in that universe, though it seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. FromSoftware is currently developing a new game called The Duskbloods that will be exclusive to the Switch 2, and they’ve also suggested they might not create a game as large as Elden Ring again.
This should suffice, and given the habits of YouTubers who adore FromSoftware games, it might satisfy them for a long time to come.
