Before the release of Battlefield 6, a major discussion point was how weapons would work in multiplayer. Traditionally, each class in Battlefield had its own specific weapons. The developers are now leaning towards letting players choose any weapon they want, regardless of their class. While some players expressed a strong preference for the traditional, class-based system, data from the game’s beta test – which included both options – showed that the difference in preference between the two systems was quite small.
After testing both weapon options, most players preferred sticking with the ‘Open’ weapons system. This confirms our decision to move forward with that system for Battlefield 6. We also found that players chose classes at roughly the same rate, with only a small difference of 1-2% between them.
Players using Open weapons got a little more kills per hour in both Conquest and Breakthrough modes compared to those using Closed weapons – about 0.2 more in Conquest and 0.1 more in Breakthrough.
Battlefield Studios prefers playlists with all weapons available, but they will also offer playlists limited to specific weapons for players who prefer that experience when the game launches.
Battlefield 6 comes out on October 10th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and computers. Some copies of the game have already been found, so be careful if you don’t want to see spoilers before you play!
