Barry Keoghan has shared that his struggles with drugs and alcohol led to a near-fatal experience, where he briefly stopped breathing. This prompted him to seek treatment in rehab on three separate occasions.
The actor has been in the news a lot recently, first with his provocative performance in Saltburn, then his romance with Sabrina Carpenter, and now because he’s playing Ringo Starr in the upcoming Beatles biopic.
I actually got to play Tommy Shelby’s son in the Peaky Blinders movie, which was awesome! It also meant I had to explain how to say my last name a bunch of times because fans were getting it wrong, haha.
Keoghan recently revealed that he briefly died a couple of years ago due to complications from drug and alcohol addiction. He has been open about this experience.
Barry Keoghan says he’s “at peace” with his addiction after almost dying

Barry Keoghan recently shared on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast that he’s developed an allergy to alcohol. He explained that he quit drinking because he feared he would start using cocaine. Keoghan achieved sobriety after a frightening experience where he believed he almost died and had a vision of being attacked.
Keoghan described a brief, vivid experience he had in London. He said he momentarily saw an image of fields and felt the wind, and in that moment, he saw a girl walking away.
So, I was shouting at this girl, but she totally ignored me and kept walking. Then, out of nowhere, a bunch of guys jumped me, started stabbing at me and trying to knock me down. It was crazy!
He explained that he realized the sensations he was experiencing were likely the doctors treating him. However, in a vision he had, it felt like they were hurting him – stabbing and pushing – and he instinctively clung to them.
They were attempting to force me to join their group, and I really pleaded with them to let me remain where I was. I kept saying, ‘Please, just let me stay,’ and eventually they agreed.
It hit me pretty hard realizing I was the same age my mom was when she passed away, and that’s what finally made me decide to get sober. It wasn’t easy, and I ended up going to rehab three times to get my life back on track.
He’s been sober for two and a half years. Having lost his mother to heroin at age 32 and also losing his father, he struggled with the urge to use, requiring three attempts at rehab. He finally reached a turning point when he turned 32 himself, realizing he didn’t want to follow the same path as his mother and stop using drugs.
I feel calm and take full ownership of my actions. I’ve embraced what is, and I’m fully focused on the present moment. I’m happy and fulfilled, especially as a father. Things that used to feel blurry are now coming into clearer, more vibrant focus.
