Wow, I just read that GameStop is making a formal offer to buy eBay! Apparently, Ryan Cohen, the CEO of GameStop, sent a letter detailing a deal worth around $55.5 billion. It’s pretty crazy to think about GameStop owning eBay – I never saw that coming!
Okay, so GameStop is planning to buy up a bunch of shares for $125 each – they’ll be paying with both cash and stock. It sounds like they’re trying to really grow and move into a lot more than just video games, which is pretty exciting if you ask me!
This news follows recent reports that the video game retailer was considering buying the online auction company.
GameStop lays out $125 per share offer and major changes
Cohen’s letter revealed that GameStop had already acquired a 5% ownership in eBay before announcing its plans.
The offer of $125 per share will be paid with a combination of cash and GameStop stock – half of each. GameStop believes this is a considerably higher price than eBay’s current stock value.
If the deal is finalized, GameStop intends to reduce its annual expenses by approximately $2 billion within the first year, focusing on areas like marketing, product development, and how the company runs internally.
The company claimed those changes could boost eBay’s earnings in the first year after the takeover.

Cohen also suggested that GameStop’s approximately 1,600 stores across the US could offer services like verifying product authenticity, processing orders, and hosting live sales events.
As of January 31, 2026, GameStop reported having approximately $9.4 billion in cash and investments. They intend to pay for the deal using both their own funds and external financing.
So, if everything goes through with this deal, I heard I’ll be running the whole show as CEO. But here’s the cool part – I’m not taking a salary or any bonuses upfront. My pay will only come from how well the company does – basically, if we all succeed, I succeed. It’s a performance-based deal, which I think is awesome.
I will be the CEO of the new, combined company. I won’t be taking a salary, cash bonuses, or any special severance package. My compensation will be entirely based on how well the company performs.
GameStop’s board has already backed the proposal, but the deal has not yet been accepted by eBay.
