2024 witnessed an unprecedented triumph of Balatro as one of the year’s most significant narratives, a turning point in the life of solo developer LocalThunk. Yet, despite this accomplishment, LocalThunk remains a one-man team and has openly disclosed that his anticipated Balatro 1.1 update will not be released in the current year.
In simpler terms, LocalThunk clarified the cause of the delay in a detailed post on his website, which essentially means “I’m Slow.” He expressed regret for the delay and made it clear that he aims to avoid the intense working hours (up to 12 hours per day) he experienced during Balatro’s launch. Instead, he prefers to consider this work as a leisure activity rather than a regular job.
LocalThunk expressed that he continues to enjoy sketching his humorous characters. He carries a notebook filled with innovative concepts he plans to incorporate or experiment with in the game. Fortunately, he views this as a pastime. However, the thought of hurrying the work and returning to intense overtime to meet this year’s deadline was disheartening. He prefers working at a leisurely pace, appreciating the immersive experience and dislikes forced creativity. In other words, he enjoys exploring various ideas in depth.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but share my thrill! Just yesterday, LocalThunk hit 100% of achievements in his personal game, and the thought of repeating this feat once the 1.1 update rolls out has me buzzing with anticipation. Rest assured, fellow fans, he’s committed to making it happen – but only when the 1.1 update is perfectly polished and ready for release.
2024 saw Balatro emerge as one of TopMob’s standout games, and it continued to accumulate accolades, including those from the 2025 DICE Awards, New York Game Awards 2025, and The Game Awards 2024. The game eventually claimed the prestigious title of Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards.
