The first season of True Detective skillfully intertwined the murder investigation with the personal lives of detectives Marty and Rust, a balance that wasn’t quite achieved in the more sprawling second season. Three years later, Netflix’s Mindhunter used a comparable technique. Based on the non-fiction book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, the show centered on FBI agents Bill Tench and Holden Ford, following them as they interviewed serial killers in an attempt to understand the motivations behind their crimes.

Netflix’s fantasy series, Shadow and Bone, was based on the books by Leigh Bardugo. It followed Alina Starkov, an orphan and mapmaker played by Jessie Mei Li, who learns she has magical abilities and could be the savior of a world torn apart by war. The show also starred Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, and Kit Young. Though Shadow and Bone ran for two seasons, in 2021 and 2023, before being canceled, one of its actors is now the lead in a different series.

Though Quentin Tarantino’s previous criticism didn’t directly lead to Lillard being cast, it did bring his talent to the attention of other directors.
