Nathan Fillion’s Firefly Sequel Returns as a Streaming Hit on Prime Video 21 Years Later

The 2005 movie Serenity, a follow-up to Joss Whedon’s series, is finding a new audience through streaming services 21 years after its release. This renewed popularity comes after Nathan Fillion announced in March 2026 that a new sequel is in development.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Serenity debuted at #10 on Prime Video‘s Top 10 Movies chart in the United States on May 28, 2026. This is a notable achievement for a film that’s been around for many years, especially considering the chart is mostly filled with newer releases, like the #1 movie and Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another at #5. Serenity continues the story from the final episode of Firefly, following a group of rebels as they travel through space while trying to evade capture.

Firefly Fans Got a Worthy Sequel with Serenity

The show didn’t last long, running for just one season with only 14 episodes completed – though only 11 actually aired before it was canceled. Luckily, dedicated fans kept supporting it, and it surprisingly won a Primetime Emmy Award for its visual effects. This success led to a deal between Joss Whedon and Universal Pictures to create Serenity, offering fans a final conclusion to the story.

The fan film Serenity brought back the original cast of Firefly, including Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Alan Tudyk as Wash, Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb, Gina Torres as Zoe, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, and Summer Glau as River Tam. Chiwetel Ejiofor joined the project as a new character, The Operative.

Like Firefly before it, Serenity centers on the exciting lives of a rebellious spaceship crew. This time, they rescue Simon (Sean Maher) and his gifted sister, River (Glau), after escaping the Alliance. Soon, they find themselves pursued by a relentless Alliance agent known as the Operative, who is determined to capture them.

The movie Serenity skillfully combines drama and science fiction, creating a compelling story that continues to impress. It was well-received by both critics and audiences, and its recent success on Prime Video demonstrates its lasting appeal. Currently, Serenity boasts an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and a 91% audience score based on over 250,000 reviews.

Critics loved Serenity for its witty dialogue and humorous characters, playfully calling it a space-western soap opera that’s both entertaining and exciting. Today, audiences on Rotten Tomatoes consider the film a classic, and many wish the story started in Firefly had been continued with more movies.

Despite Serenity’s Box Office, New Firefly Plans Are In the Works in 2026

As a huge Firefly fan, I, like so many others, was thrilled to finally get Serenity, but it honestly just reminded us how much more story we were missing. It was a great movie, but the show was cut short way too soon. To make things worse, Serenity didn’t do so well in theaters – it only made around $40 million worldwide, when it cost almost that much to make! That pretty much put the whole franchise to sleep for the last twenty years. But things are finally starting to change, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Earlier this year, Nathan Fillion announced a new animated version of Firefly. The animation will be done by ShadowMachine, known for shows like Robot Chicken and BoJack Horseman. Most of the original actors are set to return, and while Joss Whedon, the show’s creator, isn’t directly working on it, he has given his support.

Serenity is now streaming on Prime Video.
