Patrick Soderlund, head of Embark Studios, believes that human voice actors are still better than AI. The studio recently re-recorded some dialogue for their game, Arc Raiders, using professional actors to prove this point.
The game developer used artificial intelligence during the creation of the shooting game, particularly for generating the voice recordings. This decision ended up drawing criticism.
In a GamesIndustry.biz interview, Soderlund shared that AI tools sped up the creation of Arc Raiders, but Embark Studios doesn’t think AI should completely replace human developers.
Arc Raiders boss says AI was a useful “production tool”
In the interview, Soderlund explained that Embark improved Arc Raiders by swapping some of the original, computer-generated dialogue with voice acting from real performers.
After the game was released, we went back and re-recorded some of the dialogue using actual voice actors,” he explained. “We believe using real people sounds much better than artificial intelligence.

Look, as a gamer, I can tell you there’s just a difference in quality. A real actor brings something to the table that AI just can’t match, plain and simple. From what I’m hearing from people in the industry, studios see AI more as a way to help make games, not replace the actual actors we love. It’s a tool, not a substitute.
We primarily view AI as a tool to help us create things. It allows us to experiment internally, trying out fifteen different versions without needing to formally record them, so we can quickly identify the best option. While this technology speeds up development, we don’t see it replacing actors in the creative process.
We see AI as a tool to help our work, not to eliminate actors. We don’t think AI should always be used instead of real people.
Arc Raiders remains a popular choice for players looking for an extraction shooter on Steam, even with new competition from Bungie’s Marathon.
