Let me tell you, seeing Amy Madigan finally take home an Oscar after four decades was genuinely heartwarming. Nominated once before for Twice in a Lifetime, she won this year for her delightful performance in Weapons. She started her acceptance speech with a self-aware chuckle, playfully acknowledging everyone was wondering what had changed after all this time – and her answer? “This little guy!” – holding up her Oscar, of course. It was a charming, slightly goofy moment, very much in line with her spirited speech at the Actor Awards where she passionately championed unions. She graciously thanked her fellow nominees – who she described as having embraced her during awards season – and Weapons‘ writer-director Zach Cregger, before sharing a sweet moment about her family. It was a truly lovely and well-deserved win.
Madigan expressed her gratitude to her daughter and all of her dogs – we’re curious to hear more about those furry friends! – and especially her husband, Ed Harris. His reaction to her win was incredibly sweet, possibly the most romantic moment of the night. When Madigan’s name was called, she seemed a bit surprised, but Harris just smiled, looking at her with a knowing expression, as if he’d always believed in her. It’s wonderful that Madigan was recognized for her work in a genre film – which doesn’t happen often – but she truly deserved an award regardless.
