Amazon has terminated the employment of a delivery driver in California who is suspected of stealing a customer’s cat. Police are still investigating, and the driver could face criminal charges.
The claim involves a delivery made to a home in Lakewood, California, where the owner, Diane Huff-Medina, says her cat, Piper, went missing soon after an Amazon package was delivered. The incident was recorded by the home’s Ring doorbell camera and has been widely reported by local news sources.
Huff-Medina says a video shows an Amazon Flex driver delivering a package to her porch, then immediately returning to pick up her dog, Piper, by the neck before leaving in his vehicle.
Amazon driver accused of stealing cat during delivery
Huff-Medina explained to ABC7 that she had to watch the footage several times because it was dark and difficult to make out what was happening. She noticed the woman’s tail and was shocked by what she saw, saying, ‘I couldn’t believe it.’
Huff-Medina explained that Amazon eventually found the driver, but it took time to reach him. She also reached out to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who informed her it could be several weeks before they could officially look into the matter.
CBS Los Angeles reports that detectives have spoken with the driver involved, who expressed remorse but wouldn’t reveal the cat’s location. Piper is still missing, and the District Attorney’s office is deciding if criminal charges will be pursued.
Amazon told CBS LA that the delivery driver was hired through a third-party service called Amazon Flex and is no longer authorized to make deliveries for them.
Amazon stated they have apologized to Huff-Medina and are working with police by providing information to help with the ongoing investigation.
