How do all weapons work in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflections
Weapons in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflections are broadly of three types.
- Slashing
- Blunt
- Hunting

Slashing Weapons
The Slashing style offers two weapon choices: the Great Sword and the Long Sword. The Great Sword relies heavily on its Charge Gauge – the fuller the gauge, the more powerful it becomes. You can build up this gauge by using specific skills and winning direct clashes with opponents.
Unlike other weapons, the Long Sword utilizes a Spirit Gauge. When you fill even a portion of this gauge, you unlock powerful Stance Attacks – special moves with unique effects. Successfully landing a Stance Attack ends in a Special Sheathe, which then boosts the damage of your standard attacks.
Between the two, I love the Great Sword more since you can be extremely direct with your attacks.

Blunt Weapons
The Hunting Horn is a weapon that rewards skillful play by triggering beneficial Melody effects. You activate these effects by carefully arranging notes on the Melody bar. These notes come in three types – Red, Green, and Blue – each linked to a specific attack style. Beyond dealing damage, the Hunting Horn excels at providing various helpful buffs to your team.
The Hammer is incredibly powerful and excels at destroying enemy body parts. However, it limits your playstyle to a fairly straightforward approach. While I enjoy using the Hammer, I don’t feel the same way about the Hunting Horn. It’s very complicated and demands a deep knowledge of how the game works.
Piercing Weapons
Let’s talk about the Bow and Gunlance. The Bow is great for inflicting status ailments on monsters. It also features a Charge Gauge that unlocks special abilities. The effects of the Coatings you use during combat are tied to how full your Charge Gauge is.
The Gunlance is a strong option for players who prioritize defense. It allows you to block attacks and lessen the damage you take. You can also use its special abilities to draw enemy attention, and its ‘Shells’ – which act like bullets and reload automatically or through certain skills – to perform powerful extra attacks.
Okay, so if you’re looking for something easier to pick up, the Bow is still a solid choice. But honestly, the Gunlance has a steeper learning curve. You really need to get the hang of those quick, up-close attacks to reload your shells and make it work, which takes practice!
