Subnautica 2 will feel familiar to players of the first game, but it also introduces some significant improvements and changes to the gameplay. I believe these changes make the experience even better.
The Adaptation System is a new feature that gives players special abilities as they explore. These abilities are well-integrated into the game’s story, physically changing the character’s DNA to explain how they can withstand the harsh environment. Unlike the original Subnautica, where the protagonist seemed naturally resilient, this system provides a clear in-game reason for the survivor’s endurance.
Currently, there are four different vehicle adaptations available in Subnautica 2, and finding them is key to making progress in the game. If you’re not sure what to do next, let’s explore where to find them all.
Angel Comb #1 – Pressure Tolerance

You’ll discover your first Angel Comb – a unique plant that gives you your initial ability – as you play through the tutorial.
Touching the Comb feels like connecting with a sibling, because it actually shares its genetic material with you. It sounds strange, but thankfully, it keeps you alive, so it’s best not to dwell on it. After the connection, you’re able to manage
Being able to dive deep yourself doesn’t automatically mean your vehicles are equipped to handle those depths! You’ll need a special depth module to protect them.
Angel Comb #2 – Digestion
You can find the second Angel Comb very early in the game, right after you start in the main world. It’s located just north of the Lifepod, close to the water’s surface. It’s easy to spot if you simply look around the starting area.
Fortunately, getting this upgrade is easy – just swim over to the comb! Once you have it, you’ll be able to digest all types of food, so you won’t have to worry about being hungry again.
Angel Comb #3 – Heat Tolerance
If you’ve explored the eastern side of the map, you may have noticed an area of hot water you can’t enter. That’s because you’ll need a special upgrade to survive the heat!
Just west of where you landed in the lifepod is the Blighted Coral biome. It’s easy to spot – all the coral and plants are bleached white. You’ll find the Angel Comb there, but it’s been damaged by the blight and will need to be fixed.
Okay, so to progress, I need to take out these things called Bloom Cankers around the area. Apparently, the way to destroy them is with a tool called the Sonic Resonator. There are two specific locations I need to clear out to get this done.
- Directly south, beneath a large Spider Dome, there are a couple of blooms guarded by a Marrowbreach.
- Slightly Northeast of the original comb, near the Cicada Wreck, you’ll find a few more blooms.
If you’re having trouble finding the flowers, simply look for the big purple roots – they’ll lead you right to them.
Okay, so I blasted all those weird blooms with my Sonic Resonator, and now I can head back to that first Angel Comb. Doing that unlocked the Heat Tolerance Adaptation for me – sweet! Now I can take the heat, literally.
Angel Comb #4 – Axum Vision
This might be the last update for the Early Access version, but it looks like there are still two more things to add, which we’ll release soon.
Once you’ve finished exploring the volcanic area, head east to reach the Alien Ruins and the massive Axum Turbine.

Once you have your new Resonator, you’ll need to travel to these 3 spots:
- You’ll find these first few blooms in the caves to the west of the Alien Ruins. Just watch out for the aggressive fish that protect the Blooms. Once you destroy the bulb, these fish will die.
- The next set of blooms can be found directly to the southwest of the main Power Plant Turbine, or west of the Cicada wreck. Again, if you can’t find this one, follow the purple roots that lead away from the main Angel Comb.
- The final Blooms are found far to the east of the main Angel Comb, in the Root Canyon biome. On the flat cliffs, you’ll find a Cicada Wreck that seems to be covering a small vertical cave entrance. Head down through the Wreck, and you’ll find a cave with a couple more blooms within. Crush these final blooms, and the Angel Comb beneath the Turbine will be restored.
Return to the Angel Comb to unlock your last Adaptation, Axum Vision. This new ability lets you understand the language of the Ancient Axums. While you’re there, you’ll see two bases sticking out from the walls: one is low down, overlooking the comb itself, and the other is higher up, facing the damaged part of the turbine.
Look for the little yellow symbols in various areas to learn a bit of lore about the Axums.
In the Subnautica 2 Early Access, one of your goals will be to repair the damaged turbine. Once it’s fixed, you’ll be able to use the turbine’s control units to restore power to the area, which will unlock access to the Observatory near the Alien Ruins.
