What to know:
- U.S. regulators and top Wall Street bank chiefs held an urgent meeting to assess cybersecurity risks from Anthropic’s AI model Mythos.
- Mythos can rapidly spot software flaws and craft sophisticated exploits, raising fears of systemic risks in the banking system.
- Its ability to uncover and weaponize zero‑day vulnerabilities has spooked crypto and DeFi experts.
There’s genuine concern about Anthropic’s new AI model, Mythos, and its potential impact on banks. U.S. regulators are so concerned they’ve called an emergency meeting to evaluate the risks.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell met with leaders from major Wall Street banks on Tuesday to talk about potential cybersecurity threats related to a system called Mythos, according to sources who spoke with Bloomberg.
The group included the CEOs of major banks like Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs. These banks are considered systemically important, meaning problems at any one of them could impact the global financial system.
Mythos is a powerful AI created by Anthropic that helps find and utilize weaknesses in software. It’s built for cybersecurity professionals, not everyday users, and specializes in locating important software flaws and even creating ways to take advantage of them.
This episode shows regulators are starting to view AI risk in a new way. They’re no longer seeing it just as a technical problem, but as something that could potentially trigger much larger, widespread issues.
Mythos’ ability to quickly and cheaply find and use previously unknown software flaws is causing concern within the crypto community. Experts fear this could create significant risks for the systems that power decentralized finance (DeFi).
Anthropic, therefore, has taken a cautious approach, releasing the product only for small group of large technology and financial firms under “Project Glasswing.”
Anthropic had previously informed U.S. officials about the cybersecurity strengths and weaknesses of its Mythos system before launching it. Separately, Anthropic is currently in a legal battle with the Department of Defense, which has labeled the company a potential supply-chain risk – a designation Anthropic is challenging in court.
