Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 7
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has started an unexpected journey toward a character’s redemption, potentially as compelling as Loki’s transformation. In the second-to-last episode of the Daredevil: Born Again season, one of Matt Murdock’s longtime enemies was given a real opportunity to change for the better, thanks to Daredevil’s difficult choice to spare him.
Loki’s transformation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from a classic villain to a hero who ultimately saved the multiverse as a unique god, is one of the most interesting character journeys we’ve seen. It really shows what can happen with a long, connected storyline like the MCU. Now, I’m wondering if the recent episode of Born Again might be the beginning of a similar surprising path for the character Bullseye.
Benjamin Poindexter, known as Bullseye, was a dangerous and amoral killer, making him the perfect weapon for the Fisks, as shown in season 3 of Netflix’s Daredevil. Vanessa Fisk later pushed him to kill Foggy Nelson in season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again. Now, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bullseye seems to be moving towards a path of redemption, particularly after episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
Bullseye Finally Got His “One Good Deed” In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Before season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, it seemed unlikely that a character like Benjamin Poindexter could truly be redeemed. The most similar example was Bullseye, who justified his attempts to kill the Fisks as a way to achieve a single “good deed” and offset all his past wrongdoings, as he explained to Murdock in Born Again season 2.
I was really struck by how Daredevil managed to reach Bullseye in the latest episode. After such a difficult choice – honoring Foggy by showing mercy and saving Bullseye from Fisk’s agents – it was amazing to see. Even though Murdock clearly still despises everything Bullseye’s done, he still offered him a chance at redemption. He let him go, asking him to do just one good thing: protect the governor from Fisk’s men. It felt like a powerful moment, and a real turning point for Bullseye.
Even though Matt didn’t trust Bullseye, he surprisingly stepped up and saved the governor, fulfilling what seemed like a single act of goodness and potentially opening up a fresh start for himself.
What Does The Future Look Like For Bullseye In The MCU?
Considering his actions this season – like saving Matt’s life and defeating several Advanced Threat Task Force teams – Bullseye is starting to resemble an anti-hero, similar to the Punisher. Whether Marvel Studios develops him in that direction remains to be seen.
Loki, the God of Mischief, had a long journey throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including his own series, which allowed for a believable and well-deserved redemption. Bullseye, however, is a different story. Considering his abilities and troubled mind, it’s difficult to envision him becoming a true hero. Still, there’s now a possibility that Bullseye could be steered toward using his skills for positive outcomes.
If Bullseye makes it through the season finale, it will be interesting to see if season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again keeps exploring this new path for Poindexter, where he seems to be trying to improve himself.
It’s surprising to think Bullseye and Daredevil could ever be friends, but their interests might converge in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering Bullseye’s history in the comics – briefly being a member of the Thunderbolts and even filling in for Hawkeye on the Dark Avengers – we might see a similar storyline in the MCU, with Bullseye working alongside Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Look, I never would have predicted this, but Bullseye’s journey towards something resembling redemption is genuinely fascinating. It’s a total surprise, and honestly, it reminds me a lot of how Loki’s character unexpectedly grabbed us all a while back. I’m really curious to see where they take him next, whatever that may be.
The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again begins streaming May 5th on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
