A Gutsy Olivia Rodrigo Won Late Night This Week

Last week, David Sedaris was the focus of late-night television. This week, Seth Meyers featured a segment called “Seth’s Buds” on his show, Late Night With Seth Meyers. Staff writer Jenny Hagel chatted about her new book, Mike Schur praised Seth Meyers’ excellent hugging skills, and the team from Las Cultch spent time with the person everyone agrees is the most positive host. Given that Seth Meyers often refers to guests as “friends,” it was perfect to see so many people connected to the show all in one week.

Late-night shows really embraced what makes them unique this week. The Tonight Show felt like a throwback to classic episodes with Johnny Carson, featuring both stand-up comedy and magic acts. Jimmy Kimmel relaxed with tequila shots before discussing his vacation, and Andy Cohen shared gossip about Jennifer Lawrence. Each show leaned into its own personality, which made the programming particularly memorable.

Seth Meyers Can’t Leave Him Alone

I’ve never seen anyone with a checkerboard hairstyle who doesn’t have very short hair – it’s a funny look! Continuing the running joke about Seth Meyers’ friends, John Lutz did his usual “Leave Him Alone” segment, this time playfully defending Pete Hegseth. What really made the segment enjoyable was how much Lutz and Meyers were laughing – their giggles were contagious and it was fun to watch them try to regain their composure.

The Tonight Show Gets Political

Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show is generally known for avoiding politics, a fact Fallon himself has acknowledged. However, it’s difficult to ignore current events completely. While Fallon’s monologues aren’t usually focused on politics, he addresses them more often than people realize. Two sketches from Tuesday’s show demonstrate this: one cleverly portrayed a Karoline Leavitt surrogate repeatedly leaving a press conference while shedding microphone packs, and the other featured a representative of Spencer Pratt’s unsuccessful campaign reacting to the loss. Both sketches were surprisingly insightful and well-executed.

Jon Stewart Embodies Elmo

Remember Tickle Me Elmo? There’s now a viral sensation called “Degenerate Sports Gambling Elmo” who’s been losing money betting on high school baseball. Jon Stewart humorously explored the absurdity of this situation, and it was quite funny. The whole thing also highlights the need for better rules around online gambling – a topic currently being discussed in Washington D.C. Things like insider trading or offering favors to influence bets shouldn’t be allowed. It’s amusing, but it also points out important issues.

Penn & Teller Will Dazzle You

There isn’t much more to say – the performance was truly impressive and speaks for itself. The magic was excellent, the elaborate presentation enhanced everything, and Teller’s silent acting was phenomenal. It makes you realize that comedy could benefit from focusing more on classic mime instead of experimental clowning.

A Brutal Babysitting Experience for Olivia Rodrigo

Jimmy Kimmel is one of the few pranksters who feels harmless – you don’t worry he’s going too far. He seems to aim for amusement rather than malice, and his latest target was Olivia Rodrigo. He tricked her into thinking she was about to babysit, then kept adding more and more kids to the list! It wasn’t realistic (the adult-to-child ratio would be way off!), but it was funny to watch. What made the prank really work was Kimmel specifically naming each child, making the situation hilariously overwhelming, especially with all the screaming.
