Jack Reacher’s stories have been turned into movies and a TV show. Tom Cruise previously played the character in films, but the author believes the new TV series, starring Alan Ritchson, is a better adaptation.
In a recent interview with Shortlist, Lee Child discussed the adaptations of his Jack Reacher novels. He believes that TV series are better suited for these stories than movies because they have more time to fully develop characters and explore their lives. He feels this is especially true for adaptations like the Reacher series, and even suggested that if streaming services had been available earlier, the films starring Tom Cruise wouldn’t have been made – a choice he, as a novelist, would have preferred.
The biggest draw was the ability to tell a complex, detailed story over the course of a full TV season. The books give you a well-developed Jack Reacher – a character with depth and nuance. While shorter adaptations often have to cut details, we had the time to fully explore his personality, which made the show much more impactful and was something I was really looking forward to.
His story isn’t designed for a quick, fast-paced movie. Child emphasized that the slower, quieter parts are crucial, making the action later on feel more impactful. He believes this is why TV series often work better than movies – they have the time to build these moments over an entire season, something a film doesn’t usually allow.
As a novelist, I find streaming television incredibly captivating. I’m certain that if it had existed earlier, it would have been a far more appealing career path for writers, simply because it’s such a compelling medium.
The television series is a great showcase for the character, and the Prime Video show has really let Reacher come into his own. It’s already proven popular, with fans eagerly awaiting the fourth season starring Alan Ritchson.
