The first episode of Amazon Prime Video’s new adult animated fantasy series, The Mighty Nein, is now available to stream for free.
Prime Video has released the first episode of The Mighty Nein on YouTube, giving fans a sneak peek at the new series. The story centers around a mysterious and powerful object called The Beacon, which falls into the hands of a group of unlikely criminals and misfits. They’ll need to learn to cooperate if they want to save their world from total destruction.
The story begins with Caleb Widogast, a wizard down on his luck (voiced by Liam O’Brien), Nott the Brave, a spirited goblin (voiced by Sam Riegel), and Beauregard Lionett, a bold and confident character (voiced by Marisha Ray). The series takes place in Exandria, the same world as The Legend of Vox Machina.
As a huge Critical Role fan, I’m so excited for the new series! The creators have said things will be different from the original tabletop game, so expect some twists and surprises. This is their second campaign, but it’s going to be a fresh story – instead of following Vox Machina, we’re getting to know a whole new group of heroes, The Mighty Nein. Here’s what Prime Video has to say about them:
When a powerful magical item called “The Beacon” is stolen and causes a huge explosion that threatens to start a war, the unlikely group known as the Mighty Nein finds themselves caught in the middle. They soon discover they are the only ones who can prevent a complete catastrophe and save the world from falling apart.
Tasha Huo, the creator and executive producer of the new series, previously worked on shows like The Witcher: Blood Origin and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, and she’s shared some insights about it.
A key element of updating the story was exploring the characters’ backgrounds. Now we have the opportunity to show how they first meet and develop relationships. We’re using that time – around 44 minutes – to reveal their initial distrust and the challenges they face in learning to work together.
When The Legend of Vox Machina premiered in 2022, it received widespread critical acclaim and enjoyed three seasons of exciting adventures. With a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show is gearing up for a fourth season next year, potentially opening the door for crossovers with the characters from The Mighty Nein.
Voice actor Ray discussed the differences between The Mighty Rein and The Legend of Vox Machina, explaining that the newer series has a noticeably darker tone. He compared it to a shift in scale, saying that if Vox Machina felt like The Hobbit, then The Mighty Rein feels more like The Lord of the Rings.
People clearly enjoy stories about flawed heroes and supporting the underdog, which is why Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie did so well when it came out earlier this year.
