David Zucker, who directed the original Naked Gun films, wasn’t a fan of the recent sequel starring Liam Neeson. He believes the filmmakers were primarily motivated by financial gain rather than artistic merit.
I was really shocked to read what Jeffrey Zucker had to say in Woman’s World. He completely tore into the latest installment of the franchise, and it was pretty brutal! He basically said the filmmakers not only copied the original movies, but they didn’t even understand what made them special in the first place. It sounds like he was seriously disappointed.
According to Zucker, he, his brother Jerry, and Jim Abrahams pioneered the style of comedy seen in films like The Naked Gun. He feels that their success led others in the industry to try and imitate their work, as it appeared deceptively simple to those looking from the outside.
Fifty years ago, my brother Jerry and I, along with Jim Abrahams, began making parody comedies and developed a unique style. It seems we did it so well that it looks effortless, which led others to try and imitate it. Seth MacFarlane, for example, attempted this with the new ‘Naked Gun’ movie, but didn’t quite capture the original’s essence.
Zucker criticized the $42 million budget of the new Naked Gun movie, pointing out his own film only cost $14.5 million back in 1988. He argued comedies deserve larger budgets, but that comparison isn’t entirely fair. Considering inflation, his $14.5 million would be about $38 million today – nearly the same amount as the new film reportedly cost. This makes his criticism seem a bit hypocritical.
Don’t overspend on comedies – flashy special effects often don’t work well with the genre. The latest Naked Gun movie is a good example; it clearly had a large budget and tried to imitate our approach by focusing on over-the-top visuals, but it didn’t quite hit the mark.
The director stated he thought the new Naked Gun movie was made purely to make money. He strongly suggested that the filmmakers and actors were motivated by profit, and nothing else.
It seems like the main motivation behind the new ‘Naked Gun’ movie is just to make money, and that’s disappointing.
The Naked Gun (2025) is available to stream on Paramount+.
