I’ve been following Osgood Perkins’ work, and his new film, Keeper, really kept its cards close to its chest with the marketing. Honestly, the trailers were deliberately confusing, hinting at a strange romance wrapped up in a big mystery. While it hasn’t been getting rave reviews, I can say there’s a definite, creeping sense of dread throughout the whole movie – it’s a slow burn, for sure.
The movie features some genuinely unsettling and disturbing images that will stay with you. The final act of Keeper, especially its ending, resolves the central mystery in a way that many viewers will find shocking, as the film offers few clues about where the story is going.
Before the movie started, viewers saw the usual previews of upcoming films. One trailer, in particular, stood out with its eerie visuals and left a strong impression. This was the first time the trailer had been shown anywhere, as it hadn’t been released online beforehand. It quickly generated excitement for a film that had been in development for months.
The Trailer For Damien McCarthy’s Hokum Is Playing Before Many Screenings Of Keeper
The trailer for Hokum is intentionally vague, offering little information about the plot but packed with scary images. People on online forums, like Reddit, have been excitedly discussing it, with some even saying it was the most memorable part of the film Keeper. While that might not be a fair comparison, it shows just how striking the 30- to 40-second Hokum trailer was.
The movie Hokum is scheduled for release in 2026, though an exact date hasn’t been announced yet. Neon, a rising force in horror films, picked up the movie in August 2025. Along with a very unsettling first trailer that’s coming online soon, many indicators suggest Hokum could be a success when it hits theaters.
Director Damian McCarthy is filming Hokum in West Cork, Ireland, where he grew up. Though relatively new to filmmaking, he’s already proven himself a talented director. His first feature film, Caveat (2020), earned positive reviews, and his second film, the chilling Irish horror Oddity, appeared on numerous “best of” lists in 2024.
| Damian McCarthy Filmography – Key Details | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Movie | Release Date | Budget | Box Office Gross | RT Tomatometer Score | RT Popcornmeter Score |
| Caveat | 2020 | £250,000 | $78,655 | 83% | 59% |
| Oddity | 2024 | Not available | $1,850,519 | 96% | 77% |
According to Deadline, Adam Scott, known for his roles in horror and thrillers like Severance, will lead the film. He’ll play a private author who goes to Ireland to scatter his parents’ ashes, only to discover that the inn where he’s staying is haunted by a powerful, ancient witch. The story’s small, contained setting should give Scott a chance to deliver a strong performance and provide director McCarthy with a great foundation for a classic folk horror tale.
While Hokum probably wasn’t made with a huge budget, the buzz around director Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead – after their hit film Oddity – plus having Adam Scott as the lead, makes it likely to do well. I’m especially looking forward to it after seeing some early images, which were intriguing even without knowing much about the story. Those glimpses reminded me of how much I enjoyed their previous work, Keeper.
