December is traditionally a strong month for movie theaters. With children out of school for the holidays, parents often look for family activities or a chance to have some personal time. The festive season also encourages people to spend money on entertainment. This year, two major films – Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash – are expected to compete for top box office numbers. For families with younger children, the new SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is also likely to draw big crowds.
These films are just a few of the many hoping to succeed in theaters, and movie fans shouldn’t miss other interesting releases like the wild horror-comedy Anaconda and the inspiring sports drama Marty Supreme. We’ve provided details on all the biggest movies coming out in December 2025. You’ll also find a full list of every film hitting theaters, including those with limited releases, further down the page.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’
In Theaters on December 5, 2025
The 2023 film Five Nights at Freddy’s was a huge success for Blumhouse, becoming their most profitable movie up to that point, earning $297 million with a $20 million budget. So, it’s no surprise a sequel is coming, and given the first film’s popularity, it’s likely to do well too. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 continues the story, following Mike, Vanessa, and Abby after their scary experience at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Abby, in particular, tries to learn more about what happened by researching the pizzeria’s history, and discovers a new danger along the way.
As a big fan of the first film, I’m really excited that Emma Tammi is back directing and Scott Cawthon wrote the screenplay for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. It means the sequel should feel consistent with the original, which is a huge relief! Get ready for more scares because the movie hits theaters on December 5th!
‘Hamnet’
In Theaters on December 12, 2025
After winning the People’s Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet is gaining attention from critics and film lovers before its release in theaters. The film, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, offers a new look at Shakespeare’s life, focusing on his relationships and the grief he felt after losing his son. While not a traditional biography and taking some creative license with the facts, Hamnet is being praised as a deeply moving story about the famous playwright.
Praised for its emotional depth and striking visuals, the film Hamnet is generating buzz and could become a surprising box-office success. You can see it in theaters starting December 12th.
‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’
In Theaters on December 12, 2025
For fans of the original Silent Night, Deadly Night films, you’ll remember the line, “It’s garbage day!” Now, a new version of this cult classic Christmas slasher is on the way, and horror fans will be thrilled. The reimagining follows Billy Chapman (Rohan Campbell), who suffers a terrible trauma when he witnesses his parents’ murder by a man dressed as Santa Claus. This event haunts him into adulthood, turning him into a killer activated by the holidays. Get ready for a bloody and chaotic Christmas, as director Mike P. Nelson releases the new Silent Night, Deadly Night in theaters on December 12th.
‘Ella McCay’
In Theaters on December 12, 2025
The series centers around Ella McCay (Emma Mackey), a driven lieutenant governor poised to become governor. As she adjusts to the demands of the office, Ella faces intense public scrutiny alongside personal challenges, including a strained relationship with her father (Woody Harrelson) and the difficulties her husband (Jack Lowden) experiences with her newfound public life.
Ella gets help from her honest and supportive aunt, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, and a dedicated assistant, played by Julie Kavner. The film boasts a fantastic cast and marks the return of director James L. Brooks, who last directed in 2010 with How Do You Know. Ella McCay will be released in theaters on December 12, 2025.
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’
In Theaters on December 19, 2025
Following the story of Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), Avatar: Fire and Ash introduces a new Na’vi clan, the Ash People, who are connected to fire. This next installment in the popular Avatar franchise is generating a lot of excitement among fans. The addition of this new culture seems to be keeping the series fresh with more stories and unique perspectives on the connection between humans and nature. With its extensive length and a significant budget, Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to be a major blockbuster when it hits theaters on December 19th.
‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants’
In Theaters on December 19, 2025
As a huge SpongeBob fan, I’m already getting excited for the new movie! It’s called The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a blast. The story revolves around SpongeBob trying to show Mr. Krabs he’s grown up and deserves more responsibility, so he and Patrick go on a big adventure deep in Bikini Bottom. This is actually the fourth time SpongeBob’s hit the big screen, which is amazing! Mark your calendars – it comes out on December 19th, and I’m definitely going to be first in line!
‘The Housemaid’
In Theaters on December 19, 2025
Despite a challenging year for Sydney Sweeney at the box office, her new film, The Housemaid, might be a turning point. She stars as Millie Calloway, a young woman trying to escape a difficult past by taking a job as a live-in maid for the affluent Winchester family – Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and her husband, Andrew (Brandon Sklenar). As Millie gets to know the family, she discovers that their seemingly perfect life is masking disturbing secrets that quickly involve her.
The new movie, The Housemaid, is based on a popular psychological thriller novel by bestselling author Freida McFadden. Director Paul Feig, known for comedies, is trying something different with this dramatic turn, which could attract a wide audience. Given the book has sold 4.5 million copies globally, the film has the potential to be a big surprise hit, especially for McFadden’s existing fans. The Housemaid will be released in theaters on December 19th.
‘Is This Thing On?’
In Theaters on December 19, 2025
After a difficult split, Alex (Will Arnett) dives into the world of New York comedy to figure things out. He starts doing stand-up, using it as a way to honestly examine his mistakes as a husband and father. Is This Thing On? is a touching and funny film inspired by the life of comedian John Bishop, and it celebrates both family and the art of stand-up. Bradley Cooper directs and co-wrote the script with Will Arnett and Mark Chappell. The film arrives in theaters on December 19.
‘Anaconda’
In Theaters on December 25, 2025
Paul Rudd describes the new movie as more of a celebration of the 1997 film Anaconda than a remake. He explained to Collider that it’s a completely original story, and meant to be funny. The film follows a group of middle-aged friends – including Rudd, Jack Black, and Steve Zahn – who embark on an adventure inspired by their fondness for the original Jennifer Lopez movie. However, their fun turns dangerous when they encounter a massive and deadly snake.
If you’re looking for a fun and energetic movie this holiday season, check out Anaconda! It’s a wild mix of action, horror, and comedy, starring a talented group of comedic actors. The film is directed by Tom Gormican, known for his darkly funny movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Anaconda arrives in theaters on December 25th.
‘Marty Supreme’
In Theaters on December 25, 2025
Timothée Chalamet stars as Marty, a ping-pong player inspired by the real athlete Marty Reisman, who tries to popularize the sport in the 1950s. To convincingly play the role, Chalamet trained hard in ping-pong. Marty Supreme is also the first solo film directed by Josh Safdie, known for Good Time and Uncut Gems. With a talented cast and crew telling an underdog story in a unique sport, Marty Supreme is a film you won’t want to miss. It hits theaters on December 25th.
‘Song Sung Blue’
In Theaters on December 25, 2025
Inspired by Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary, Song Sung Blue tells the story of Mike and Claire Sardina (played by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson), a real-life couple who perform as a Neil Diamond tribute act called Lightning & Thunder. The film follows their lives over many years, showing the highs and lows as they pursue their musical dreams. Jackman and Hudson are a fantastic match, bringing both musical talent and emotional depth to this heartfelt story about love, music, and personal challenges. Director Craig Brewer, known for films like Hustle & Flow and Empire, is perfectly suited to direct this musical that also delves into very human struggles. Song Sung Blue will be released in theaters on December 25.
