Every Pokémon game features a Pokémon Professor, beginning with Professor Oak in the Kanto region. These characters typically give players their first Pokémon and offer helpful guidance and advice as they progress through the game.
Traditionally, Pokémon Professors have always been people dedicated to studying Pokémon. However, that’s about to change in the new Pokémon Pokopia game. A recent trailer released on the official Pokémon YouTube channel revealed that the game’s Professor is actually a Tangrowth!

Professor Tangrowth assists Ditto in the world of Pokemon Pokopia. This Tangrowth stands out with its unique white head and a CD attached to one of its vines – a nod to the Teach Machines and Hidden Machines found in many Pokémon games.
In the world of Pokemon Pokopia, things are pretty run-down, and Pokemon roam freely in the wild. You play as a Ditto – a Pokemon that can transform – who becomes human and decides to rebuild towns and help any Pokemon in trouble.
You’ll encounter Professor Tangrowth early in the game. They’ll help you learn about the world and serve as a source of quests as you progress.
You know, it’s kinda cool how Professor Tangrowth fits right in with the whole Pokemon Professor tradition. For ages, those professors were always named after plants or trees, right? But in Pokemon Pokopia, they went all-out – Professor Tangrowth is a living plant! It’s a neat little detail that really ties everything together, and I love that they kept the nature theme going strong.
The idea of a Pokemon Professor makes perfect sense for a game like Pokemon Pokopia, since that game doesn’t feature any humans. It’s not certain if it would work well in the main Pokemon games, but it’s definitely amusing to see it tried out in a side game.
