In a spectacular debut, Borderlands 4 stormed onto Steam, breaking previous records set by the series just hours after its release.
The fourth installment of the franchise made a powerful entrance on Steam, boasting the highest debut in the series so far, reaching a peak of 207,479 simultaneous players on its launch day. This number surpasses the previous record holder, Borderlands 3, which managed slightly over 94,000 players at release, putting every other title in the franchise in its shadow.
Due to this increase, Borderlands 4 has climbed its way into Steam’s top ten most popular games, occupying the seventh spot at the moment. This looter shooter is now associating with some of Steam’s major players, such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
On Steam alone, Borderlands 4 is playable. However, it can also be found on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and will soon launch on Nintendo Switch 2 (on October 3). As a result, the player count for this game is probably already quite significant due to its wider availability.
Borderlands 4 is the most-played Borderlands game
In simple terms, Borderlands 4 has a Metacritic score of 84, placing it among the top-rated games in the series, just behind Borderlands 2. Critics have lauded its enhanced gunplay, additional movement features like double jumps and grappling hooks, and the diverse new environment of Kairos, which introduces more verticality and variety to battles.
Looking forward, the creators behind the gearbox have unveiled their plans beyond the launch, which include a significant expansion known as “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,” set to arrive in early 2026.
The growth offers a chilling tale drawn from cosmic horror, a novel character as a Vault Hunter, new realms to traverse, plus the customary blend of quests, rewards, and aesthetics that the franchise is recognized for.
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly watching to see if the player community maintains its strength in the upcoming weeks. However, with an array of fresh paid and free content on offer, it appears that Gearbox Software’s newest looter shooter game is poised for longevity.
