Project Runway Recap: Pressure Cooker

If a designer who’s making a name for themselves in fashion were to gift you a free outfit tailored just for you, what kind of garment would you prefer? Since the client-desired outfit has become a classic on Project Runway, I’ve given this question some thought, and my choice would always lean towards futuristic outerwear. Think along the lines of the coats from Blade Runner 2049 or Andor – medium length, large collar, numerous pockets, with leather details. These styles are great for contemplating what truly makes us human or strategizing rebellion against a tyrannical empire. In essence, they’re perfect for everyday pondering about existential questions and planning covert operations!

In this week’s episode of “Threads of Confidence,” we witness a familiar setup reminiscent of “Project Runway.” This installment stands out as the best of the season so far, even though the challenge remains slightly convoluted – the designers are tasked with creating evening wear that boasts a striking runway reveal. Despite the complexity, I enjoy such challenges for they offer unique glimpses into the designers’ real-world interactions with clients. This episode showcases intriguing aspects of Antonio and Jesus’s characters, as their actions contrast sharply with my expectations. Jesus disregards his client’s preferences in favor of imposing his own style; conversely, Antonio collaborates effectively with Stephanie, delivering a garment that makes her feel fabulous. What a twist of events!

And yes, we’ll get to that cliffhanger ending. Because what! I repeat: WHAT???

Project Runway concludes its Western-themed contest with Yuchen’s departure, taking me by surprise (I had anticipated Veejay’s red vinyl dress would be the one to go). On his exit, Yuchen shares that this experience will stay with him forever. I fervently wish it instills confidence rather than doubt in his skills. I found Yuchen’s soccer-ball/molecules school-materials task unexpected and inventive (as was the unfinished alien hoodie), and if he cultivates a more playful, Jeremy Scott-inspired style, I believe he could forge an intriguing career. As for Veejay, she acknowledges how narrowly she escaped elimination and vows to reassess some of her choices, a trait clearly reflected this week in her tasteful yet safe ensemble.

In a more conversational and simplified manner, the text could be rephrased as follows:

“The team is now left with only five members, and when Heidi presents them with a customer challenge, she mentions they’ll be ‘working even harder.’ My notes read: ‘Just how much harder can these people be pushed?’ Every challenge lasts for a day, and each evaluation involves competition against Law. Unfortunately, Nina has been away for quite some time now, so the contestants aren’t receiving her valuable feedback from her extensive industry experience. The manufactured intensity of these heightened stakes isn’t convincing us, Heidi!

Heidi then clarifies that this is a client-focused challenge, and the designers will be collaborating with everyday people to ‘make everyone feel comfortable and attractive.’ All clients share the common trait of having eczema, which limits the types of clothes they can wear due to certain fabrics and formulations causing flare-ups. Although Heidi didn’t specify, I later found out that this challenge is sponsored by LINNÉ, a skincare company focusing on products for individuals with eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

As a cinephile, let me rephrase that for you in a first-person narrative:

“In this fashion extravaganza, I found myself paired with the 19-year-old whiz kid, Jayden. Meanwhile, my fellow contestants were matched with designers of various ages. Veejay got the youngblood, Ethan received a seasoned pro, and Antonio was teamed up with another contender like myself. But the real drama unfolded between Jesus, Belania, and their 37-year-old designers, Jarrad and Jewel.

The moment Jarrad stepped in, he wasted no time dropping a flirtatious line, leaving Jesus feeling a bit dazed. However, when Jarrad revealed his fluency in Spanish, the sparks really started to fly between them – much to my amusement as Jesus quipped, “Are we on a date right now?”

As for the fabrication process, things seemed smooth sailing for most pairs. But that all changed when our designers presented their ideas for outfits. Jarrad and Jesus found themselves at odds with each other’s visions – especially when Jarrad proposed a longish jacket and low-V neck shirt, which Jesus’s client deemed “a little effeminate” and not his style.

In simpler terms, there’s tension between Belania and Jewel due to their differing fashion preferences. Jewel tends to favor neutral shades like nudes, while Belania appears frustrated by this, finding it hard to connect with Jewel on a fashion level. The show’s viewers may only see an edited version of their interactions, but it seems that Belania doesn’t delve deeper into Jewel’s specific shade preferences (like mauve, mahogany, or taupe). Meanwhile, Antonio and Stephanie are discussing a costly outfit to accentuate Jewel’s cleavage. Jayden usually dresses casually, but Veejay suggests a more formal quarter-zip sweater for him. Lastly, Ethan is looking forward to Rachel showcasing her body, as this aligns with his drag-inspired style.

Following their trip to Mood, the designers begin their work. Christian initiates with an analysis of Jesus’s design, expressing how he can subtly communicate much with a simple “Hrms.” Christian’s remark about his mother wearing Jesus’s sequined tweed jacket being harsh but accurate is noteworthy. Similarly, the beaded collar added to Jarrad’s deep-V wrap shirt seems equally unsuitable. The overall aesthetic feels reminiscent of Gob Bluth from White House Black Market.

Christian questions Belania’s combination of silver lame and plaid wool, as it does not align with Jewel’s taste. He also expresses reservations about her idea to open a trench coat to reveal a dress underneath, finding it rather predictable. Christian is uncertain about Ethan’s plan for a long white dress paired with a beaded top due to concerns about the papal feel of the former and potential damage to the client’s skin from the latter. He encourages Ethan to switch to a minidress design, but Jesus advises Ethan to paint the white fabric and create his own pattern instead. In an unexpected turn of events, Ethan decides to follow Jesus’s guidance rather than Christian’s advice! Quite dramatic, indeed!

The clients have arrived, and Christian stays behind, creating an engaging atmosphere as he observes the designers and their clients interacting. Christian teases Veejay over a sweater he made for Jayden that reminds him of his uncle’s Christmas attire from decades ago. Jayden chuckles and admits the sweater has a festive feel due to its emerald-green material, but he adores it, and Christian is impressed by his satisfaction. Antonio is performing well, aiming for a double reveal with his transformation from outerwear to strapless dress; he receives a low five from Christian, while his client Stephanie admires the black fabric with sparkling beads he’s using. However, Jarrad remains unsatisfied with Jesus’s look and wants it to exude more masculinity, Rachel is dissatisfied with Ethan’s crisp white fabric, believing it’s not flattering, and Jewel appears uncertain about Belania’s silver drape top, which both she and Belania now dislike due to the time-consuming sewing process. With nearly two-thirds of the designers grappling with issues, things aren’t looking too good.

Time to hit the runway! The panel of judges comprises Heidi, Law, designer Harris Reed, and comedian Nikki Glaser. Contrary to popular belief, replacing “Nina” with a namesake doesn’t deceive anyone! Let me walk you through the outfits:

1. Look 1 – A vibrant red number that exudes confidence.
2. Look 2 – A monochrome ensemble in cool shades of blue, perfect for a summer day.
3. Look 3 – An edgy leather jacket and pants combo, paired with a delicate blouse for a touch of femininity.
4. Look 4 – A bold, graphic print jumpsuit that turns heads wherever it goes.
5. Look 5 – A sleek black evening gown with intricate detailing that’s sure to make a statement.

Maria: Antonio’s description is of a princess-style overcoat in black with green highlights that transforms into a black strapless minidress embellished with beading.

Juan: Veejay describes a black leather jacket, dark-wash jeans with matching black leather accents, and an emerald-green quarter-zip sweater.

Carla: Belania’s description refers to a long plaid sweater jacket layered over a silver lame asymmetrical top and black dress shorts.

Ramon: Ethan’s description features a long white coat that opens up to reveal a Rorschach-style paint-splatter patterned minidress.

Pablo: Jesus describes a long black tweed jacket with sequins, black pants, and a white wrap blouse top with sequin collar.

In the current competition, with fewer participants, all contestants present their clients’ looks on the catwalk for judging. Viewing all the ensembles together, it becomes quite clear who excelled, primarily based on the comfort of the models wearing their outfits.

Firstly, the positive feedback: Law and Harris applauded Antonio’s multiple reveals, while Law admired the fit on Stephanie’s dress, albeit noting that it seemed slightly large in the bust area and appeared to droop slightly (there was a moment where Stephanie adjusted the dress by pulling it upwards, suggesting that it could have benefited from better fit). However, Law expressed his attraction to Stephanie’s cleavage, stating “I’m actually getting attracted to your cleavage and I’m extremely gay,” indicating her success in some aspects.

Similarly, Veejay received praise for her well-constructed jacket, with the judges appreciating the leather panels on the denim pants that added cohesion to the look and their admiration of Jayden’s happiness with the sweater. However, Veejay was held back from a win due to the lack of a dramatic reveal on the runway; Jayden unzipping his leather jacket to show the sweater underneath wasn’t as impactful as desired.

Finally, Antonio earned a well-deserved victory this time around.

In the center, much like a week prior, is Ethan, whose gaze significantly separates the panel. When Rachel strutted down the runway, Heidi expressed her uncertainty with a “Huh,” and during critiques, she questioned the white outerwear’s resemblance to a lab coat and criticized Ethan’s fashion sense. Harris suggested that the inkblot pattern should have adorned the outside of the jacket instead of being part of its reveal, but he and Law overall appreciated the look. My weekly observation from Law: “She’s a provocative lady, which I enjoy,” he remarks about Rachel’s leg and cleavage exposure in her minidress, and they both laugh, making it acceptable. Rachel defended Ethan’s design effectively by claiming it was so captivating that it made her eczema seem insignificant, which was her goal, hence Ethan’s success. Belania and Jesus, however, were not as impressed.

In Belania’s work, there seems to be no correlation between the pieces, and Jewel openly states she wouldn’t purchase the silver top herself. Law’s criticism, though blunt, appears fitting to me. Belania didn’t cater to any of Jewel’s style preferences, nor did she provide strong enough pieces to persuade a change in style or color for Jewel. Her creations seemed to disregard Jewel’s desires entirely.

Similar to Belania, Jesus heard Jarrad’s complaints about his outfit but chose to overlook them. Although Jesus made minor adjustments by removing some sequins from the shirt’s collar, the overall look is described as a child playing dress-up in what Nikki refers to as a “pirate magician” attire.

Heidi perfectly sums up the situation with her witty remark that the outfit feels like it came straight from Dancing with the Stars, “it’s bedazzled on top of bedazzled on top of bedazzled.” If Jarrad is allowed to keep these clothes, it’s safe to assume he won’t be wearing them again.

It’s not surprising that Jesus expresses frustration over the judges’ criticisms, as he states in his confessional, “This doesn’t make any sense at all.” What is shocking, however, is that the episode concludes with Heidi announcing an elimination of both Belania and Jesus, a double elimination. The judges seem to have found issues with both Jesus’s “sloppy toppy” and Belania’s “mismatched mess,” deciding that they were equally problematic? I believe this setup could lead to a face-off challenge in the next episode, where one contestant might be given another chance to remain in the competition, similar to Top Chef’s Last Chance Kitchen. However, it’s possible that Project Runway would not reduce the number of contestants for both the penultimate and finale episodes, correct? Right???

Fabric Scraps

My preferred choice for this episode’s attire is Veejay’s green sweater, which I find quite appealing. It certainly has a lovely color to it!

Notable moments from the episode stood out for me: Rachel, apparently oblivious to who Christian is, referred to him as “this man.” Stephanie’s lively exclamation, “I can’t wait to flaunt my looks and snag a husband!” while discussing her outfit with Antonio was quite amusing. Furthermore, Nikki’s insight that Belania’s outfit mirrored two stages of Kate Middleton – her youthful party phase and her more mature queen-in-waiting image – was spot on.

• Antonio’s “obstacle” becomes a source of frustration as he criticizes Jesus for being distracted by Jarrad’s flirtatious behavior; Veejay’s “cocktail maker” role repeatedly tries to instigate conflict between the twins.

Christian showed assertiveness with Ethan’s outfit this week, and it made for great television when he firmly stated “This isn’t happening.” However, I’m curious if Ethan ultimately used none of the original beaded material at all in his outfits.

It seemed as though Ethan’s strong reaction to Veejay skipping the “reveal” segment of this week’s task might have been a sort of retaliation for Veejay playfully accusating him of copying her wool dress design from last week.

My doubt about Belania and Jesus not making it stems from Heidi wearing an outfit reminiscent of Belania’s during the promotion for the new season. Given her actions, I believe there’s a chance that Belania may have advanced further in the competition, although I must admit the outfit was quite extraordinary.
