Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean the scary movies have to stop! The 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a surprisingly good one, and it’s now available to stream for free on Tubi as part of their November additions. It’s a worthwhile watch any time of year.
Featuring Jessica Biel, Eric Balfour, Jonathan Tucker, and R. Lee Ermey, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a remake of the classic 1974 film, often considered a horror masterpiece. Released during the early 2000s when remakes were popular, this version is one of the better ones produced by Platinum Dunes.
This movie centers around a group of friends on a road trip in Texas who stumble upon a terrifying family of cannibals. They soon find themselves hunted by Leatherface, a monstrous killer who uses a chainsaw.
This new version of the classic horror film follows a group of young travelers – Erin, Andy, and Morgan among them – who stumble upon a remote, rundown house in Texas. Sadly for them, the house is home to a family of dangerous, disturbed killers, led by the terrifying Leatherface, a large, masked figure who begins to stalk and hunt them. Will anyone manage to survive the night?
When The Texas Chainsaw Massacre came out, it was a big financial success, earning over $107 million despite only costing $9.5 million to make. While audiences enjoyed it, critics didn’t like it very much. Currently, it has a 37% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers give it a much higher score of 58%.
The film was released on DVD by New Line Home Entertainment with several extra features that fans enjoyed. One especially disturbing addition was a collection of crime scene Polaroids – delivered in a blood-stained envelope – which were genuinely unsettling.

Okay, so if you haven’t seen the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre, be warned – I’m about to mention some things that might spoil it! A lot of people think the movie is based on a true story, specifically the crimes of Ed Gein, but it’s not a direct retelling. It’s more like the filmmakers were inspired by what Gein did – those truly awful acts – but they didn’t actually recreate his crimes in the movie. And honestly, even knowing that, it’s still a really terrifying film!
One of the remake’s strengths is its realistic storytelling. While the ending echoes the original film, screenwriter Scott Kosar adds a chilling final scene: actual footage of police investigating the crime scene. The grainy, old-fashioned video quality is deeply unsettling, and a final glimpse of Leatherface will leave you breathless after what is a truly scary slasher film.
