A Canadian rental ad is getting a lot of attention online, but not in a good way. A landlord is asking $650 a month to rent what is basically a tent set up in a basement, and it doesn’t even include access to a bathroom.
Someone in Peterborough, Ontario, was advertising a furnished basement apartment on Facebook Marketplace. It initially seemed like a great find, especially given how difficult the housing market is right now.
Okay, so I just saw the pictures of this “apartment” and I’m honestly horrified. It’s basically a dingy, unfinished basement – seriously, it looks like something straight out of a horror movie! There’s an old, beat-up couch, a dusty TV, and get this – the “bedroom” is actually just a camping tent pitched in the corner. And the worst part? No bathroom and no kitchen! I can’t believe someone is actually trying to rent this place.
Things get even more concerning. The ad also mentions that three women are living next door, suggesting the room might not be private. On the bright side, pets are allowed – and honestly, living there might require some extra emotional support!

Internet baffled by tent rental in scary basement
Social media tore the listing apart before it was removed.
One user jokingly commented, “I have to wait until the lease is up before I can address the missing bathroom.”
“Rent it for a month, use the bathroom on the floor, peace out,” another said.
People have noted that the unit doesn’t seem to follow housing regulations. One person described it as an illegal, dark, and unpleasant space, lacking basic necessities like windows and running water.
This has to be a joke right?

Several people commented that the room strongly resembled Buffalo Bill’s house from the movie The Silence of the Lambs.
“It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again!” users quoted.
Canada’s rental market is known for some unusual listings, but a recent one in Toronto really stood out. In 2023, a realtor shared an ad for a $900-a-month rental where the landlord was asking a tenant to share her bed.
It’s good these landlords were upfront, because some others are using AI to deceptively make their old, poorly maintained apartments appear new in photos.
