Jason Statham’s Death Race Sequel: 17 Years Of Anticipation

I’ve been a Jason Statham fan for years, and I still really hope he revisits his role as ‘Frankenstein’ in another Death Race movie – a proper sequel, that is! The 2000s were such a great time for his action films, giving us classics like Crank and The Transporter. It was also a period where he was really finding his footing and trying out different things on screen, which was exciting to watch.

He starred in the unconventional film Revolver directed by Guy Ritchie, and also appeared in the somber drama London. It quickly became apparent that he excelled in action roles, and audiences especially enjoyed seeing him drive. This made him a perfect choice to lead the remake of Death Race, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

The story centers around Jensen Ames, a skilled driver wrongly accused of murder. He’s forced to compete in a dangerous racing competition called Death Race. Ames must take the place of the famous racer “Frankenstein,” who actually died in a previous race. If Ames wins the competition, he’ll earn his freedom.

The 2008 action film Death Race was financially successful, earning $87 million in theaters and $25 million from rentals (according to Box Office Mojo). While critics weren’t impressed, the film’s over-the-top action and video game-like feel – it’s similar to the Twisted Metal game brought to life – have gained it a dedicated fan base.

I Want To See Jason Statham Return As Frankenstein In A Death Race Sequel

The movie Death Race is a remake of the 1970s film Death Race 2000, but it lost a lot of the original’s over-the-top humor. I wasn’t impressed with the 2008 version when it first came out, but it’s actually become one of my favorite Jason Statham movies to watch again and again.

The movie’s action is solid, even if the editing feels a bit rushed. Joan Allen is fantastic as the villainous warden, and the story moves along at a brisk pace. It’s an enjoyable, albeit slightly cheesy, film. While the ending – with Statham’s character escaping to Mexico with his daughter – doesn’t obviously lead to another movie, it definitely leaves you wanting one.

While the recent Death Race film kept the action limited to a single prison island, future sequels have the potential to explore a much larger and more detailed dystopian world. The original film suggests a broader setting, and it would be simple to bring the character of Jensen/Frankenstein back for another installment. Compared to Jason Statham’s other film series, Death Race feels like it has the most untapped potential.

Death Race Received A Few Straight To Video Sequels

While Death Race was successful, it wasn’t a huge blockbuster. This probably led the filmmakers to explore more options by licensing the concept to STV, resulting in three additional films. Specifically, they created two movies that told the story before the original, and one traditional sequel.

The Death Race Franchise Release Year
Death Race 2008
Death Race 2 2010
Death Race 3: Inferno 2013
Death Race: Beyond Anarchy 2018

The sequels to the first Death Race, Death Race 2 and Death Race 3, feature Luke Goss playing the character originally known as Frankenstein, who is killed off at the beginning of the reboot. Although made for the home video market (DVD and Blu-ray), these films still had significant budgets and attracted well-known actors like Sean Bean, Ving Rhames, and Dougray Scott.

The last installment, Beyond Anarchy, came out in 2018, and the series hasn’t had a new release since. While all the Death Race sequels have been enjoyable, light entertainment, the concept is so visually exciting that it really deserves to be shown in theaters.

A Death Race Legacy Sequel Has An Obvious Hook

I’ve been really enjoying Jason Statham’s recent movies – he consistently delivers as an action star. He’s got a lot coming up, including another Beekeeper film, but honestly, I’d love to see him revisit Death Race with a proper sequel. I think there’s still a lot of potential there!

Okay, so it’s been almost 20 years since they made the last movie, and I’m really hoping they bring back Frankenstein – but an older, tougher version! I’d love to see him pulled out of retirement to protect his daughter, who’s all grown up now. You know, it’s interesting, the original plan for the 2008 movie was way bigger. It was originally called ‘Death Race 3000’ and the whole thing was supposed to be a race around the world! That would have been insane.

I heard they had some really wild ideas for that movie, like cars that could literally come apart and put themselves back together! Apparently, Tom Cruise was even going to play Frankenstein, but things fell apart because of money and he didn’t love the script. It’s a shame, because the initial concept sounded amazing, and honestly, I think a sequel starring Jason Statham could really bring it back to life.

It’s a really strong idea for a sequel, and I’m surprised it hasn’t been explored already. While it would be expensive to make, Jason Statham is a major star, and the original film was already successful, making this a promising project.

This new installment could also serve as a fresh start for the series, as viewers wouldn’t need any prior knowledge to enjoy it. The idea of Jason Statham speeding through a ruined world is instantly appealing, and it’s the closest thing audiences will get to seeing him in a role like Mad Max.

It’s unlikely Jason Statham will reprise his role as Frankenstein in Death Race. The first movie wasn’t a massive success, and the sequels seemed to wrap up the story. However, I’d prefer to see him return to the Death Race series over making another Mechanic or Transporter film.
