Dwayne Johnson is looking forward to moving past his involvement with DC Comics films. The actor, known for The Smashing Machine, recently discussed his experience making those movies, which likely marks the end of his role in the DC Extended Universe.
While talking about his part in the new sports movie The Smashing Machine, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson explained that his wrestling career prepared him for this role. He said, “Definitely. Being a villain in wrestling was great practice, almost like how The Rock eventually became an anti-hero. I really enjoyed making Black Adam and building those characters, and introducing new ones to that world.”
Johnson has spoken about his role as Black Adam as if it’s in the past, saying he enjoyed the experience, wishes the franchise success, and is now moving on to new projects.
Dwayne Johnson’s movie Black Adam came out in 2022 as a follow-up to the 2019 film Shazam! While Johnson wasn’t in Shazam!, he helped produce it and had been developing his own Black Adam movie for a while. The film tells the story of Teth-Adam, also known as Black Adam, a powerful, ancient being who is freed from a magical prison by archaeologists hoping to liberate the nation of Kahndaq.
Despite Dwayne Johnson’s enthusiasm, Black Adam received mixed reactions from critics and didn’t perform well financially. The movie earned $393 million globally, but with a production budget between $190 and $260 million, it didn’t make a profit. While critics gave it a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have grown more positive over time, giving it an 87% approval rating based on over 5,000 reviews.
Despite Black Adam not performing well at the box office, Dwayne Johnson has long remained optimistic about its future. There was talk of it launching a new direction for the DC Universe, and a sequel was even planned with a showdown between Black Adam and Superman. However, after Henry Cavill left the DCEU and James Gunn announced a complete reboot of the DC Universe, it appears Johnson is now accepting that those plans won’t come to fruition and is ready to focus on other projects.
James Gunn’s New DC Universe Doesn’t Have Immediate Plans for Black Adam or Shazam
As a huge DC fan, I was so excited to see James Gunn kick off his new DC Universe with the Superman movie earlier this year! David Corenswet was fantastic as the Man of Steel, and it really felt like a fresh start for DC. Everyone loved it, and it made a ton of money at the box office! Now, Gunn’s been hinting at what’s coming next, but it looks like fans of Black Adam and Shazam! might have to wait a little longer to see those characters return – at least for now.
As a huge DC fan, I’m so excited about what’s coming! It looks like Supergirl is the first movie we’ll see, hitting theaters on June 26, 2026. Then, a Clayface movie is planned for September 11, 2026, and another film will be released sometime in the summer of 2027. Plus, they’re working on projects with so many of my favorite characters – Batman, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman, the Teen Titans, and villains like Bane and Deathstroke, just to name a few! It’s a really exciting time to be a DC fan.
Black Adam is now streaming on HBO Max.
