A remarkably lifelike humanoid robot has captivated viewers, with many initially convinced it wasn’t a machine at all.
XPENG, a Chinese electric vehicle company, introduced its latest robot at its Tech Day event on November 5th. The new robot is an android designed to look and move like a human, with realistic facial expressions and smooth movements.
The initial reveal video quickly became popular in China, leading many people to believe someone was inside the robot’s costume. To prove it wasn’t a trick, XPENG CEO He Xiaopeng shared another video showing engineers opening the robot’s back and revealing its internal mechanical structure.
Robot so lifelike it had to be cut open
The robot, called IRON, is incredibly lifelike in its movements. As reported by Global Times, it has 82 different points of articulation, a spine similar to a human’s, artificial muscles, and a flexible, skin-like covering designed to make its motions look realistic.
A video quickly spread online showing XPENG engineers opening up part of the IRON robot’s leg while it was on stage. The robot then walked away normally, revealing the moving metal parts inside.
XPENG announced that its robot is powered by a solid-state battery and is being designed to perform service tasks like greeting people and patrolling areas.
XPENG’s new IRON robot is so realistic that many people initially thought it was a person in a costume. To demonstrate that it was, in fact, a robot, XPENG’s CEO, He Xiaopeng, dramatically cut open the robot’s leg skin during a public event. Remarkably, the robot then continued walking off stage.

Wow, this new humanoid robot really shows how fast China is becoming a leader in AI and robotics! It’s amazing to see companies working on self-driving cars and research groups building robots that can actually play soccer and handle really complicated jobs all on their own. It feels like they’re making huge leaps forward!
We also covered a story about a robot that went to a graduation and received a diploma, showing how close the connection between people and artificial intelligence is becoming.
XPENG’s incredibly realistic robot, while perhaps a bit strange or amazing, represents significant progress in China’s efforts to create robots that closely resemble humans.
