Square Enix is planning to heavily integrate artificial intelligence into its operations, aiming to have AI handle 70% of its quality testing and bug fixing by 2027.
When creating a video game, making sure it works properly – quality assurance and debugging – is crucial. It’s incredibly annoying to encounter glitches or get stuck while playing an otherwise great game, and that’s where QA and debugging come in – they help find and fix problems both before and after the game is released.
Square Enix’s recent financial reports show they are increasingly relying on AI to handle tasks previously done by human employees, particularly in areas like testing for bugs and ensuring game quality. They’re making a big move toward automating these processes.
Square Enix to use AI for quality control and debugging by 2027
After releasing its recent financial report, Square Enix revealed a collaboration with the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. They’ll be working together to use artificial intelligence to improve the way games are tested and perfected.
This new partnership, called Joint Development of Game QA Automation Technology Using Generative AI, is focused on making game development faster by using artificial intelligence. The goal is to let AI handle much of the work involved in finding and fixing bugs, as well as quality assurance testing.

In their recent report, Square Enix explained that they’re using AI to make their game testing process faster and more effective. The goal is to gain an edge in game development by using AI to find bugs, automate tests, and even mimic how players actually use the games, allowing them to fix problems more quickly.
This change probably won’t immediately affect players, but it shows a big move for Square Enix. It’s unclear if they’ll use the staff previously dedicated to quality assurance for other parts of game development, but it’s obvious the company is heavily investing in artificial intelligence for its work.
