Japan is planning a big effort to increase the global popularity of anime and video games, with a new strategy focused on boosting exports and using its pop culture as a major driver of economic growth.
Japan is aiming to significantly grow its entertainment industry internationally, with a goal of reaching 20 trillion yen in overseas revenue by 2033 – that’s about $130 billion. This involves substantial funding for anime, video games, and other content creators to help them expand globally, representing a major push for Japanese culture on the world stage.
According to Automaton, this new program aims to provide lasting financial support for ambitious creative projects. It will give funds directly to game studios, cutting out the need for intermediaries.
Japan reveals $130 billion plan to boost exports
As South Korea’s entertainment industry expands worldwide, Japan is working to increase its own global cultural influence and create popular franchises that will succeed internationally.
In addition to providing financial support and promoting exports, Japan promised to respect artistic freedom. This means creators can accept government funding without having to compromise their creative vision.
This announcement comes amid growing discussions about censorship in the gaming world, including changes made for specific regions and restrictions on platforms and payment methods. In July 2025, Steam changed its rules to meet financial network requirements, which resulted in some games being removed. Other platforms, like Itch.io, also removed thousands of games due to similar pressures.

Japan wants to expand the global popularity of anime and its video games, but it’s determined to maintain the unique artistic qualities that first made them so successful.
This is great news for both fans and creators, promising bigger and more ambitious projects, increased international reach, and a chance for Japan to lead the way in entertainment.
Okay, so everyone’s going crazy for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle! It absolutely smashed box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film ever after it came out globally on September 12, 2025. We’re talking over $660 million worldwide – seriously impressive!
The recent release of the Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc is also incredibly popular, demonstrating the growing global interest in anime.
