Like so many fans, I’m really hoping Rockstar Games will announce Red Dead Redemption 3 eventually. But it sounds like one person wouldn’t be thrilled: Dan Houser. He co-founded the company and was a key writer and director on both Red Dead Redemption games, but he left Rockstar back in 2020.
Dan Houser recently spent nearly three hours talking with Lex Fridman. During the conversation, he discussed what gives the GTA and Fallout games their distinctively “American” feel, revealed details about Rockstar projects that were cancelled, and shared insights into the creation of their Western-themed games. He also explained why he doesn’t think making another game in that Western style would be a good move.
As a big fan, I’ve always seen each Grand Theft Auto game as its own thing, a separate story. But honestly, it would be way more heartbreaking if they ever continued the Red Dead series. Those two games felt like one complete story, and hearing they were moving on from that world would really sting. It just felt like a really solid, finished arc, you know?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to the first game, telling its story through the eyes of Arthur Morgan. He’s a member of Dutch’s gang, alongside John Marston, who players will remember as the main character from the original 2010 game.
Dan Houser admitted that a third Red Dead Redemption game will likely happen despite his leaving Rockstar, meaning he has no control over its development. Rockstar is currently focused on finishing GTA 6, so RDR 3 is on hold. However, it’s possible the developers will start working on it after GTA 6 is released, which would please fans but potentially frustrate Houser.
